Summer Feeding Program sets new record

Tuesday, July 25, 2017

With the success of last year’s Summer Feeding Program in the books, the Greencastle Community School Corporation (GCSC) partnered with the United States Department of Agriculture once again to bring free breakfasts and lunches to the children of Putnam County this summer.

Debbie Carrico, director of food services for GCSC, utilized the same resources as last summer to not only bring about a repeat of 2016, but also break a record of children served in the process.

“I’d like to say congratulations to the food service department for breaking their Summer Feeding record,” Superintendent Jeff Hubble said Monday during the corporation’s July public session. “Last year we fed a total of 11,461 meals. This year we fed 11,848, so we’re up nearly 400 meals more this year.”

Hubble went on to say that a total of 3,356 breakfasts were served with an additional 7,260 lunches served at various locations around Greencastle, including Ridpath Primary, GHS and Robe-Ann Park via the local-favorite mobile cart.

In addition to the free meals served to children under 18 years of age, 1,232 adults also received meals for $3 each, totaling nearly $4,000 raised for the program.

  • Russiaville, Ind. School feeding program was cancelled early on because of the lack of cooks and low student participation. Sometimes we generalize problems too much and waste resources instead of reaching out directly to where the needs are. Sounds like this situation is right on target. Good job!
