PUTNAMVILLE — A Greenwood woman allegedly not only had her daughter in tow when she attempted to visit an offender at Putnamville Correctional Facility on Tuesday.

Investigators also alleged she had 5.9 grams of heroin.

Sarah Elizabeth Maxie, 33, was intercepted by investigators while trying to visit offender Justin Legan and was escorted to the office of Investigation and Intelligence for questioning.

Acting on gathered intelligence from within the facility and the internal telephone system, Investigators J. R. Smith and Angela Taylor, as well as lead Investigator Keith McDonald, convinced Maxie to surrender the contraband she had on her person.

This included two baggies containing a brown leafy substance, which appeared to be 6.6 grams of tobacco and a brown powder substance that tested positive for 5.9 grams of heroin.

Maxie was placed under arrest without incident and transported to the Putnam County Jail and faces preliminary charges of Level 3 felony conspiracy to deal in a narcotic drug (over 5 grams) as well as Level 5 felony neglect of a dependent (while possessing a narcotic drug). She is being detained on $30,000 cash bond.

The Indiana Department of Child Services was contacted.

“This case unfortunately involved an innocent child, and our staff handled it professionally, without incident, and her exposure was as minimal as possible,” PCF Warden Brian Smith said. “I commend all the staff that were involved. They did a great job of working together and staying on task.”

Legan is currently serving several consecutive sentences out of Marion and Johnson counties for the crimes of robbery and two counts of burglary. He currently has an earliest possible release date of Oct. 7, 2022. He is being investigated and held in the facility’s restricted housing unit.
