John Raymond Stevens, 82, of Greencastle, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017, at Asbury Towers.

John was born in Indianapolis on Feb. 28, 1935, the son of William Dewey and Lulu Anne (Jones) Stevens, and was a 1953 graduate of Greencastle High School.

Mr. Stevens was the chief of police for Greencastle for many years, and was a police officer for 20 years. He also worked as a juvenile probation officer for 10 years.

John served on the city council for two terms. He coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball for more than 20 years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 47.

Survivors include three children, Jennifer Phillips of Lawrenceville, Ga., John Stevens Jr. of St. Augustine, Fla., and Jeff Stevens (wife Tina), of Pawnee, Ill.; two sisters, Mary Schmidt of Danville and Gladys Templeman of Roachdale; a step-sister, Janice; a step-brother, James Boatright; four grandchildren, John Stevens III, Savannah Stevens, Bradley Stevens and Nicholas Stevens; one great-grandson, John Stevens IV; a brother-in-law, John Ray (wife Alice); and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Mary Joan Stevens; a granddaughter, Erin Michelle Fowler; a brother, Desmond Stevens; and a sister, Edith Blye.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5 at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until time of service.

A Masonic service will take place at 11:45 a.m. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. The F.O.P. will perform burial honors at the cemetery.
