Young Cub golf team nipped in opener

CLAYTON — A young and inexperienced Greencastle Lady Cub golf team traveled to Deer Creek Golf Club on Monday and opened the 2017-18 season with a narrow loss 214-213 to an experienced Monrovia team.

The Lady Cubs have three seniors in returnees Macey Masten and Rose White, plus newcomer Marin Nally.

Newcomer Bailey Shuee is the team’s only junior, and freshman Molly Ramey rounds out the team.

“Our three newcomers have never played in a match, but did an amazing job of playing well against a veteran Monrovia team,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said. “Macey played well at No. 1 with a good score of 45, having only 14 putts in her round. Rose shot her best score in her two years on the team and Marin only had one circle score on her card.”

Paquin said his two underclassman newcomers also showed promise.

“Bailey had a very strong showing with great drives and good iron shots during her round, and Molly showed that she will improve rapidly and lower her scores quickly,” he said. “As a coach I was extremely pleased with the composure and good play exhibited by the girls. This team will improve quickly and be very competitive with the other teams on the schedule.”

GREENCASTLE (214) — Macey Masten 45, Bailey Shuee 52, Rose White 56, Marin Nally 61, Molly Ramey 70.

MONROVIA (213) — Hannah MacLean 44, Grace Faulkenberg 50, Kristin Moscan 59, Michayla Swafford 60, Allison Eischute 65

Next match — Greencastle competes today in the Terre Haute South Invitational at Rea Park, starting at 10:40 with its No. 5 player teeing off.
