PREP GOLF: Clover girls defeat Northview, Linton in opener; Cubs fall to THS

LINTON — Cloverdale’s girls’ golf team opened its 2017 season on Tuesday by defeating Linton and Northview at the Phil Harris Golf Course.

“It was a solid team effort,” Clover coach Kyle Walter said.

The Clovers were led by senior Abby Walker with a medalist score of 48 for the low round of the competition.

Cloverdale (228) — Abby Walker 48, Sammie Shrum 54, Hannah Nichols 56, Michaela Nees 69, Libby Dominguez 70

Northview (234) — Buell 53, Ehrlich 53, Allen 61, Johnson 67, Sampson 70.

Linton (INC) — Riggleman 52, Meek 65, Potter 70.

Next match — Cloverdale will play South Putnam on Monday at Clover Meadows.

In other high school golf:

• Terre Haute South 180, Greencastle 238 — At Windy Hill, Terre Haute South recorded the top three scores of the day in defeating the Tiger Cubs on Wednesday.

Macey Masten led Greencastle with a 48.

“A veteran Terre Haute South team played solid golf to defeat the Tiger Cubs,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said. “Consistent scoring by the Braves and a combination of youth and inexperience by the Cubs made the difference in the match.”

Paquin thought inconsistent ball striking and putting hurt the Cubs.

“Windy Hill is a very difficult course for young and inexperienced players and this was evident for everyone,” he said. “The hills, fast greens and difficult lies caused the girls problems in making low scores. As the girls get more familiar with course conditions they will make better decisions on club selection and figuring out how far to hit their shots.”

Paquin noted the team has established goals to achieve as the season progresses.

“Our main goal for the next few matches will be to try to eliminate one shot per hole and cut down on the three and four putts,” he said. “Then we will see improvement in scoring.”
