CCSC to publish proposed 2018 budget, plans

CLOVERDALE -- The Cloverdale School Board approved publishing the proposed 2018 budget, capital projects plan and school bus replacement plan during Monday’s regular meeting.

Superintendent Greg Linton reported that the average daily membership (ADM) for the 2016-17 school year was 1,176 students, a decrease from 2005-06 of 207 students.

In making the budget each year, Cloverdale Schools assumes it will lose 15 students.

The 2017 beginning cash balance was $1.5 million, down from last year by $145,351.

While no rate or levy was set for the general, pension or rainy day funds, the following funds had rates and levies, respectively: Debt service ($0.86, $1.8 million); capital projects ($0.64, $1.3 million); transportation ($0.56, $1.2 million) and bus replacement ($0.21, $425,000).

A public hearing will take place Sept. 11 in the Cloverdale Schools administration building for public review and comment.

In other developments:

-- Agriculture: Duane Huge announced that recently hired ag teacher Chris Kaufman will represent Cloverdale as the new Indiana State Ag Teacher President for the Indiana Association for Agricultural Educators.

-- Claims: The board approved claims at $345,806.23 total, a $317,691.66 decrease from last month and a $344,154.37 decrease from the year’s average. Claims so far this year have totaled $5.5 million. The largest claim was $861,028.45 in April, and has since then steadily decreased. The average claim is currently $689,960.60.

-- Donation to CES: The board approved a $3,500 donation from General Cable to Cloverdale Elementary School. New Cloverdale Elementary School Principal Mary Elkins discovered and applied for the grant.

“We would like to thank General Cable for their donations to the Cloverdale Elementary School,” Superintendent Linton said.

-- Pay increases: The board approved a pay increase for bus drivers driving for extra-curricular and field trips. Drivers will now receive an additional $1 per hour for Monday - Friday trips and an additional $2 per hour for weekend and holiday trips.

-- Pianos: The board declared two pianos surplus.

-- Personnel: The board approved the following personnel report:

-- Resignation: Krista Grimes (CES pre-K teacher), Laura Mabry (developmental preschool teacher), Teresa Welch and Holly Watkins (instructional assistants)

-- Employment: Paige Gruener (CES pre-K teacher), Melissa Hoffman (instructional assistant), Sandra Whitley (CES/CMS cafeteria part-time), Kathy Salter (substitute for Kim Bailey), Lisa Nally (CHS media center/technology specialist)

-- Maternity leave: Kim Bailey (CMS 6th-grade teacher)

-- Hire: Paige Gruener (7th-grade volleyball, basketball coach), Steve Caulkins (7th-grade football coach), Kurt Kyle (8th-grade football coach), John Cartmell (CMS assistant football coach), Kyle Walter (CHS girls’ golf coach), Chad Chrisman (assistant football coach), Sam Brown (JV baseball coach), Kyle Walter, Greg Thomas and Andy Tyler (weight room supervisors)

-- Policies: The board heard the first reading of Board Policies 3220.01 and 5111. The only changes were legal updates.

The Cloverdale School Board’s next regular meeting is set for Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Cloverdale Schools administration building.
