Cloverdale approves bid to repair fire station roof

Tuesday, August 22, 2017

CLOVERDALE -- During a special meeting Monday, the Cloverdale Town Council approved a $40,120 bid from Midwest Maintenance, of Greenwood, to repair the roof on the building rented by the Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department.

Repairs will include roof work at the west and south ends, door lintels, painting and new fascia. Town Manager Wayne Galloway said work would start as soon as possible.

The council had received two other bids for the project: Hoosier Carpenter, of Plainfield, for $41,880 and Carrell Construction Works, of Cloverdale, for $45,171.25. The first bid was not bonded or insured, which is a legal requirement for the town’s approval.

The council approved paying for the repairs from the public safety LOIT funds, which is a local option income tax (LOIT) collected by the county and distributed to local governments to benefit emergency responders as the local government deems necessary.

The council will officially approve using the fund with a resolution set to appear in the council’s next regular meeting Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Cloverdale Town Hall.

Cloverdale distributes the fund between the Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department and the Cloverdale Police Department.

Cloverdale Trustee Dale Monnett disapproved using the fund, saying the town would be using money that would otherwise have gone directly to the fire department to repair the town’s building.

The council responded that the money belongs to the town and would be used to keep a roof over the fire department’s equipment.

The fire department will still receive the $15,000 it gets from the town each year. Last year the fire department received about $20,000 in public safety funds for the purchase of 15 new sets of turnout gear.

In other developments:

-- Absences: Don Sublett and Gary Bennington were absent from the meeting.

-- Ordinance 2017-8: The council was introduced to Ordinance 2017-8, which regulates noise in the town. The council is set to consider approval at its next regular meeting Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Cloverdale Town Hall.

The Cloverdale Town Council’s next regular meeting will be Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Cloverdale Town Hall.
