Steven Michael Spencer, 51, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017 at his home following a battle with cancer.

Steve was born on Nov. 7, 1965 in Lafayette, Ind., son of Bruce Spencer and Mary (Simmons) Humston.

He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1984. After high school, he served 12 years in the United States Navy where he visited 17 different countries.

Steve attended Ivy Tech Community College following his service. He worked as an elevator mechanic for the IUEC Local 34 Elevator Union.

Steve was a past member and Commander of Whitestown American Legion Post 410 and Southern Division. He also was a member of the El Shaddai Emmaus Community and Celebrate Recovery (CR).

On Nov 2, 2013 he married his soul mate, Patty A. (Rice) Aker. With Patty, his life path and goals were changed, because he began living his life to the fullest capacity with her.

In his free time, Steve enjoyed church activities, golfing, baseball, being a lifelong Purdue fan and geocaching. He loved spending time with his family, children, grandchildren and also his animals, and was even called the "Goat Whisperer."

Steve was a member and deacon of Life Builder Community Church in Greencastle.

He loved listening to Christian music, Emmaus Walks, enjoyed motorcycles, drinking iced tea in his jug and serving others with his whole heart.

He is preceded in death by his father, Bruce W. Spencer.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Patty Spencer; two sons, Patrick Spencer (Jennifer) and Jimmy Spencer (Nikki); daughters Stephanie Spencer, Morgan Aker and Madison Aker; grandchildren Brantley, Ethan, Addison, Jackson, Tavin, Dallas and Nora; mother Mary Humston (James); sisters Tabatha Perkins (Jamey), Shawna Butler (Shelby) and Wendy Ernst (Ern), as well as many extended family members and friends.

Services will be Sunday, Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. at French Funeral Home with Pastor Bobby Hopper officiating. Visitation will Sunday from 3 p.m. until time of the service at the funeral home.
