Airport Appreciation Days set to reach new heights

Plans are flying high for Putnam County Airport Appreciation Days scheduled for Sept. 9-10 at the Putnam County Regional Airport, 100 Ballard Lane, Greencastle.

A family friendly event, it offers something fun for aviators and non-aviators of all ages. Hosted by the Putnam County Airport Authority and PDM Aviation LLC, the hours are Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Festivities begin on Saturday, Sept. 9 with the raising of the flag and Bobbie Lancaster performing “America the Beautiful” at 9 a.m.

Many community partners will be participating in the event. EAA Chapter 1374 will be holding its annual Young Eagle Rally; children 8-17 will be able to obtain a free airplane ride during the rally. They will receive a certificate and logbook to document the flight. (Parents or guardians must be present).

For the adults and children under the age of eight there will be paid airplane rides available by PDM Aviation in a Cessna 172 or with Cliff Robinson in his Stearman bi-plane or by helicopter with Freedom Helicopters.

For all kids of all ages Big Bounce House Fun Rental will be bringing some fun inflatables, iceless ice skating rink, face painting and other surprises.

The Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce and the Greencastle Rotary Club will have games and gifts to hand out to attendees.

Participants can visit booths and displays of the Greencastle Fire Department, Greencastle City Police, Putnam County Operation Life, Putnam County Sheriff‘s Department, Community Emergency Response Team, Air National Guard, Aircraft Owners Pilots Association, Stat Flight, Air E Vac, Popular Rotorcraft Association Chapter 34, Area 30 Career Center, Ham Radio Operators, York Automotive, Fashion and Freedom LLC and others.

Howard Brooks of DePauw University will be conducting a high-altitude balloon launch on Saturday at 12:15 p.m.

The Greencastle Fire Department Smoke House will be on hand Sunday for demonstrations exiting a building during an emergency.

Food vendors will include the Lions Club, Hatchet House BBQ and Molly’s Tacos.

D.J. Figgy Hardwick of Figgy’s Follies will be entertaining attendees throughout the day both Saturday and Sunday. WREB will be broadcasting live on Saturday 10 a.m. to noon, sponsored by PDM Aviation LLC.
