PREP ROUNDUP: Tiger Cub soccer claims county with wins over NP

Friday, September 1, 2017

Greencastle recorded a pair of shutout wins over North Putnam on Tuesday to claim the county championship in both girls’ and boys’ soccer.

The results:

Greencastle 8, North Putnam 0 (girls) –The Lady Tiger Cubs travel to North Putnam to regain the county “Golden Boot.”

The Cubs led 2-0 at halftime, with the first two points gained from two separate penalty kicks from Erin Thomas and Kennedy Trigg.

Second-half scoring was by Trigg (with assist from Gretchen Weliever), Thomas (with assist from Annie Hershberger), Trigg (with assist from Claire Gillen), Trigg (unassisted), Thomas (unassisted) and Weliever (with assist from Thomas).

Shut out goal keeping skills were held by Claire Gillen and Ashlynn Guyer.

“Two first-half hand balls in the penalty area cost the Lady Cougars,” NP coach James Hilton agreed.

No. 15 Greencastle 9, North Putnam 0 (boys) – Evan Crowe scored three goals and six other players found the net for the Tiger Cubs

“North Putnam was a good opening game for our conference,” Greencastle coach J.D. Sims said. “We were able to get a lot of players on the score sheet. Some of the younger players who typically play JV got some time in varsity, which is always a plus.”

Cougar coach Curt Krominaker was pleased to see his team continue to improve.

“Playing the third game in four days against a good team with plenty of rest showed in the second half when our guys’ legs and conditioning had seen their limit,” he said. “Every game is a learning experience for the players and coaches.”

Volleyball

Cloverdale 3, Turkey Run 0 – The Cloverdale varsity volleyball team defeated Turkey Run Tuesday 25-22, 25-29, 25-16. The team moved to 5-3 for the season.

Leading the Clovers were Kiley Shedron and Hannah Rady from the service line.

“The Clovers have been working hard at aggressive, performance-planned serving and it is really improving their game,” Cloverdale coach Traci Scott said. “Kiley led with four aces and 12 points and Hannah had four aces and 10 points.”

The offensive attack was led by Tori Combs and Kenzie Stoltz.

“Combs and Stoltz both have great vertical jumping and power with helps them compete against much taller opponents,” coach Scott said. “Both players are a threat.”

Scott noted that Hailey Thomas is leading in digs and serve reception, followed by Stoltz.

“Hailey is a great front row player and I was hesitant to keep her in the back row as libero,” she said. “But, once the switch was made two games ago, it is obvious that she needs to stay in the back row to improve our game. Haley can play any position on the floor, so it’s about deciding which area needs to improve against witch opponents.

“The team has a lot of athleticism and has not yet peaked at its potential.”

Cascade 3, North Putnam 1 – The Cadets won by scores of 25-11, 25-17, 18-25 and 25-13.

Bradi Gierke 13 had kills for the Cougars, while Young had five kills, Dana Tennis had four kills and Clarissa Gibson added 25 assists.

“In the third set, the girls really worked well together,” North Putnam coach Bonnie Osborn said. “This team shows lots of promise.”

Riverton Parke 3, South Putnam 0 – At Mecca, the Panthers won by scores of 25-20, 25-22 and 25-18.

“The girls fought to the end and never gave up. We had some long volleys and made some great saves to keep the ball in play,” coach Rachelle Custis said.

The third set went back and forth with Cloverdale taking an 8-5 lead before the Tiger Cubs stormed back to take a 12-10 lead.

Sky Lowe stepped back to the serving line and rattled off four straight serves aided by Clover defense to seal the victory at 15-12.

Golf

Greencastle wins triangular – The Tiger Cubs shot a 215 to get past Monrovia’s 220 and Cloverdale’s 243.

Grace Falkenburg of Monrovia was the medalist with a 45, while Greeencastle’s Macey Masten was runnerup with a 50.

“The course played very difficult for the teams with hard, fast greens and difficult lies that made scoring low very hard,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin observed.

Greencastle (215) – Macey Masten 50, Bailey Shuee 51, Marin Nally 53, Rose White 61, Molly Ramey 65.

Monrovia (220) – Falkenburg 45, Swafford 53, McClain 61, Moscan 61, Eisenhut 62.

Cloverdale (243) -- Hannah Nichols 53, Sammie Shrum 57, Abby Walker 59, Libby Dominguez 74, Michaela Nees 80

Cougars third in triangular – The Lady Cougar golfers traveled to Tomahawk Hills with the enthusiasm of having all seven players for the first time.

Tri-West won with a 202, while Crawfordsville had a 223 and North Putnam carded a 241.

“This is perhaps the most challenging course the Cougars have played this season so far, especially for the younger players,” NP coach Linda Patrick said. “Taylor Dixon started out very good, hitting five fairways with her driver for the first time in three weeks, but got into trouble on the last three holes, thus shooting the low score for the Cougars with a 51.”

Patrick noted that her younger players are continuing to have the ups and downs associated with learning the sport.

“Abby [Simmerman] carded a 60, not her typical low 50s,” Patrick said. “Abby rushed some shots, didn’t get good flights and was in penalty trouble several times. Brittany Bonifacius stayed steady on her numbers with a 62 and was low putter with only 18 putts for the night.”

Patrick noted that Grace Timm, one of the most improved scorers for the team, took a “setback” shooting a 69 and had several penalty strokes that affected her score.

“As the Cougars begin to look toward the end of the season, all players are going have to take a hard look at what they can achieve individually to prepare themselves for sectionals,” she said. “The players still have problems with inconsistent hitting, club choice decisions, smart decisions facing hazards, tempo and timing.”

North Putnam (241) – Dixon 51, Simmerman 60, Bonifacious 62, Timm 69, Greene 68,Williams 70

Crawfordsville (223) – Snyder 53, Kincaid 57, Mittal 53, Redding 60, Redding 69

Tri-West (202) – Lewis 46, Walters 52, Renback 56, Broshures 51, Purdue 53

Reagan Ladd and Drew Steffy each had a 57 to pace the Eagles.

Tennis

South Putnam 5, Turkey Run 0 — The Eagles lost just one set in continuing their excellent season.

“It was another great team win,” SP coach Johnny Briones said. “Our doubles teams played some really good tennis and covered the court well; they were very aggressive.

“Number 2 singles [Ty VanSickle] continues to play very well, picking up another win. No 3 singles [Garrett Heavin] is hitting the ball more consistently, playing some really good tennis.

“Once again, No. 1 singles at times seemed to be ready to concede, but continued to play mentally strong tennis, and picked up the win.”

Briones was proud of all his players, but was sorry he had to leave his JV team at home since Turkey Run could only accommodate a full varsity team.

The Eagles host Speedway on Tuesday and Southmont on Thursday.
