Camper occupants on I-70 arrested for drugs

CLOVERDALE -- Two men were arrested on drug-related charges Friday afternoon after the camper they were traveling in was stopped on Interstate 70 in Putnam County by Indiana State Police troopers from the Putnamville Post.

Just after 12:30 p.m., troopers stopped a 1999 Gauls camper for alleged unsafe lane movement on eastbound I-70 near the 37-mile marker, four miles west of Cloverdale.

During conversations with the occupants, troopers detected the odor of suspected marijuana, State Police reported.

A search of the vehicle yielded approximately 10 grams of suspected marijuana, 100 suspected manufactured steroid pills, scales, assorted drug paraphernalia and $3,000 in U.S. currency.

The driver, Maurice Jackson, 22, of Crown Point, was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance.

Passenger Brendin Van-Niekerk, 24, of South Africa, was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of controlled substance and visiting a common nuisance.

The two men were lodged in the Putnam County Jail.
