PREP ROUNDUP: Tiger Cubs split with Northview

BRAZIL — No. 15-ranked Greencastle won its second Western Indiana Conference game of the season with a 4-0 victory over Northview on Thursday.

“The team displayed its best performance of the season,” Greencastle coach J.D. Sims said. “We controlled the ball and played smart throughout a majority of the game.”

Sims noted that Hector Lezama had “a great game” with two goals and an assist. Evan Crowe continued his goal scoring with another goal and an additional assist.

Jakob Foss contributed “a great opening score,” Sims said, while Kevin Polster had an assist for one of Lezama’s goals.

“Simon Foss had a standout performance in the center of the park,” Sims added. “The entire backline for Greencastle played extremely well.”

Greencastle hosts Bethesda Christian today at 11.

In other soccer:

Northview 4, Greencastle 0 (girls) — The Lady Tiger Cubs traveled to Brazil Thursday evening to take on the Knights, and fell 4-0.

Northview scored two goals in each half.

“Possession and shots were made but were not enough to keep the Knights from pulling away with a win,” Greencastle coach Angie Weeks said. “Claire Gillen had an impressive 24 saves and clearly led the defensive line.”

The Tiger Cubs play at Terre Haute South on Tuesday.

Tri-West 9, North Putnam 1 (girls) — The Lady Cougars lost at home to “a good Tri-West team,” coach James Hilton said.

“The Lady Cougars started the game off with a foul in the penalty area, allowing a penalty kick goal to get Tri-West started,” Hilton said. “The Lady Cougars’ backup goal keeper suffered an injury in the first half and would not return to the game.”

Hilton said his team played hard and didn’t give up with six freshmen on the field and one sub on the bench by the end of the game.

Abby Spencer scored the lone goal for the Cougars.

North Putnam plays at West Vigo on Tuesday.

Golf

Cascade 199, South Putnam 233 — The Cadets had an outstanding team score to defeat South Putnam.

“The girls had some good holes and a few bad ones in between,” coach Kevin Metz said. “We struggled on the greens here and there which is something we will need to continue to work on.”

The Eagles were led in scoring by Drew Steffy, Anna Carrington and Kate McCammack with 58s.

Leighla Hazlett added a 59, while Alex Fanning had a 64 and Kortnee Starks shot a 65.

The Eagles play at Northview on Tuesday.

Tennis

Tiger Cubs win three — Greencastle improved to 4-0 in the conference and 7-1 overall with three dual-match victories this week.

The Tiger Cubs defeated South Vermillion 4-1 on Monday, Turkey Run 5-0 on Tuesday and beat West Vigo 3-2 on Thursday.

Against West Vigo, Sean Ramey won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Trent Ross won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Luca Magni won 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 3 singles.
