PREP ROUNDUP: No. 14 Tiger Cubs remain undefeated with win, tie

Thursday, September 7, 2017

Greencastle’s boys’ soccer team, which moved up to No.14 in this week’s Indiana Soccer Coaches Association Class 2A poll, recorded a tie and a win in a pair of recent matches to stay undefeated at 6-0-2.

On Saturday, the Tiger Cubs hosted Bethesda Christian and emerged with a 1-1 draw.

Bethesda was the first team to strike in the game, giving Greencastle its first deficit of the season.

“The boys struggled to get a consolation goal until Ben Parsons took the game into his own hands and bent a shot around the keeper late in the second half,” Greencastle coach J.D. Sims said. “The boys lacked rhythm most of the game. We got caught flat in the back, ball watching which led to a goal for Bethesda.

“Once we went down we switched our wings so they would be on their dominate foot if they were to cut in and have a go at goal. The Bethesda keeper played way too far out of position and this strategy paid off when Parsons bent one in off his left foot towards the end.”

Despite the tie, Sims was happy to salvage a tie.

“It was not our best performance, but thankfully we were able to pull off a goal and avoid the loss,” he said.

Greencastle beat Southmont 4-0 at home on Tuesday.

Sims said the team started off slowly at first.

Jakob Foss began the scoring for the evening with a late goal in the first half. Ten minutes into the second half, Hector Lezama made a run for goal and was fouled – leading to a penalty. Simon Foss stepped up and finished his third penalty of the season.

“At that point, the boys started to pick up their game moving the ball more efficiently after the cushion of the second goal,” Sims said.

Evan Crowe struck his 11th goal for the season and Ivan Glotzbach would go on to score his first varsity goal with a chipped shot over the keeper. Crowe, Lezama, Kevin Polster and Simon Foss each had an assist.

Goalie Brody Watson had three saves in each match.

Greencastle will play Cascade at home this Saturday.

In other soccer:

West Vigo 1, North Putnam 0 (boys) – The first half was played to a scoreless tie, but the Vikings came up with a second-half goal to escape with the win.

“It was a very evenly-matched game between the two teams on a windy night,” Cougar coach Curt Krominaker said. “Both teams had positive moments in the game that were responded too by the other team’s good defense. The only breakthrough on the night occurred when a ball being cleared was held up by the wind and a West Vigo member jumped on the ball first to put it in the net.”

After a week full of matches last week, Krominaker was glad his team was able to work on some things.

“We finally had a chance to get a practice in Friday and it paid off with a much-improved performance,” he said. “The team played up to our ability tonight and everyone was happy with the improvement. With one of our players being injured, Marcus Burdine played on the wing for most of the game in his place and made several good runs.

“Hopefully this is a turning point for the rest of the season.”

West Vigo 7, North Putnam 1 (girls) – West Vigo led 4-1 at halftime and scored the only three goals of the second half.

Kylee McCollough scored the only goal for the Cougars, assisted by Grace Fry.

Terre Haute South 6, Greencastle 0 (girls) — The Tiger Cubs trailed 2-0 at halftime and the Braves won the second half by a 6-0 margin.

The second half was a continued tough rally between the two teams, Greencastle coach Angie Weeks said.

Claire Gillen had 17 saves as goal keeper.

Tennis

South Putnam 4, Speedway 1 – The Eagles improved to 4-2 by winning both doubles matches and No. 1 and 2 singles.

“For not having a Monday practice [due to the holiday], this match was a great way to start the week,” SP coach Johnny Briones said. “Our doubles teams continue to play really well, as do the No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles. No. 3 singles played hard, but fell a little short of the W.”

The Eagles also won all four of the junior varsity doubles matches.

“I was extremely proud of how the JV played,” Briones said. “As a whole, the team is improving every day.”

North Montgomery won the first set 25-23, before Greencastle rebounded to win 25-14 and 25-18.

The Chargers won the fourth set 25-22, then the final set by a 16-14 margin.

“The team struggled with consistency and focus,” Greencastle coach Maggie Walters said. “We mentally take ourselves out of plays. Once we figure the mental part out, the rest will fall into place.”

Jalyn Duff led the Tiger Cubs with 45 assists, while Allison Stevens had 14 kills and six blocks, Jada Amis and Ivy Wright each had 11 kills, Lilly Meyer had 10 kills and 10 digs and Maggie Meyer had 24 digs.

The Lady Clovers were led by Hannah Rady from the service line with 10 points, four aces and 21 assists.

Kenzie Stoltz led the offense with 11 kills, 10 service points and 16 digs. Tori Combs also was aggressive at the net with five kills and six blocks.

Hailey Thomas led the defense with 25 digs.

“The Clovers took Monday off on Labor Day and it showed,” coach Traci Scott said. “We were slow to move to the ball.”

The JV Clovers lost in three sets.

Owen Valley 3, South Putnam 1 – South Putnam fell to Owen Valley in four sets with the scores of 20-25, 5-25, 25-20 and 13-25.

“In the second and fourth sets we had too many minor errors,” SP coach Rachelle Custis said. “Unfortunately, having too many minor errors made a huge gap in the score. On serve-receive and attacks, we didn’t position our bodies in the middle of the ball, which made us attempt to save too many plays.

“However, the girls didn’t let the first two sets distract them they fought harder in the third set to take the win.”

Tiger Cubs place third – Greencastle placed third in a triangular match on Wednesday.

Edgewood and Cascade tied for first with 219, with Edgewood emerging as the winner based upon best fifth-player score.

Marin Nally led Greencastle with a 53, while Bailey Shuee had a 54, Rose White had a 66 and Molly Ramey had a 67.

“The Cubs played without their No. 1 player [Macey Masten] due to illness, which meant they had to score their four players against five for the other teams,” coach Steve Paquin said. “Youth and inexperience proved it’s difficult to score only using four scores. The girls played to their averages, but missing their low scorer proved too much.”

In other golf:

Tiger Cubs place second — Crawfordsville shot a 195 to win a triangular match on Thursday, with Greencastle second at 205 and Northview third with 206.

Marin Nally led the Tiger Cubs with a career-best score of 40 to win medalist honors, while Rose White shot a 54, Molly Ramey a 55 and Bailey Shuee a 56.

“Our other three scores were consistent with a 54, a 55 and a 56,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin noted. “Molly also had her best score of the year.”

The Cubs again played without No. 1 player Macey Masten, who is out with bronchitis but is expected to return for the county tourney.

“Before the meet we were able to recognize seniors Reagan Ladd, Anna Carrington and Alex Fanning for their hard work and determination throughout their golf careers with the Eagles.,” SP coach Kevin Metz said. “The girls played well, however, fell to a very good THS team. I appreciated all of the spectators that came to watch, given rain showers throughout the meet.”

Drew Steffy led the Eagles with a 51, while Kate McCammack had a 52, Ladd shot a 53, Leighla Hazlett shot a 56, Kortnee Starks had a 57, Carrington shot a 62 and Fanning added a 63.

Southmont 193, North Putnam 227 –The Lady Cougars hosted Southmont for their final home match of the season.

The Mounties reached their goal of shooting under 200, while the Lady Cougars trimmed 14 strokes from their last match total.

“With cooler weather and sunny skies, both teams enjoyed a great night of golf,” North Putnam coach Linda Patrick said.

Senior Taylor Dixon was happy with her 44 for her last home match, Patrick said, but she was beaten out for medalist honors by Williams with a 41.

“Cougar Haylee Greene was finally able to shake the low 60s by carding a 59,” Patrick noted. “Grace Timm and Mady Williams both shot 62s and both dropped their scores by seven strokes from the previous meet.”

Patrick said her team still has things to work on.

“We are still having too many penalties and too many high putting numbers,” she said. “The Cougars are going to have to work extremely hard the rest of the week and weekend to prepare for the county tourney.”
