County Jail

Four people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Sunday

• At 8:52 p.m. John Stephen Brown, 64, Bainbridge, was lodged at the jail for resisting law enforcement and public intoxication.

• At 1:15 a.m. Danny Allen Burchett, 42, Greencastle, was taken into custody for domestic battery possession of methamphetamine, possession of a synthetic drug and reckless possession of paraphernalia.

Saturday

• At 6:47 p.m. Russell Allen Benson, 41, Coatesville, was housed at the jail for driving with a suspended license with a prior conviction and theft.

Friday

• At 2:38 p.m. Robert Lee Jones, 39, Greencastle, was booked in on a local warrant.

Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies responded to four recent property damage crashes.

• At 4:49 p.m. on Sunday, Keith R. O’Clair, 27, Avon, was westbound on State Road 240 in a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am. Nathan Couch, 40, Greencastle, was eastbound in a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado.

O’Clair told Deputy Riley Houghton he dropped his cell phone and took his eyes off the road. He crossed over the center line and into the eastbound lane.

Couch said he saw O’Clair cross into his lane and got as far right as he could, but could not avoid the collision.

Neither driver was injured and both vehicles were driven from the scene.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

• At 6:58 a.m. on Sunday, Brandon S. Workman, 18, Greencastle, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2008 Mercedes-Benz. He told Deputy Josh Boller he “fell asleep” and rear-ended a 2011 Toyota 4Runner driven by Kendra L. Coons, 43, Cloverdale.

Boller said workman appeared to be under the influence of an illegal drug. He declined sobriety testing, so Boller took him into custody and transported him to the Putnam County Jail.

Workman was booked in the jail at 8:47 a.m. for driving while intoxicated, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.

Workman’s car was towed. Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

• At 8:39 p.m. on Saturday, Angela Y. Brown, 53, Bloomfield, was southbound on State Road 75 at State Road 240 in a 2007 Honda CR-V. Bradley Woods, 42, Danville, was eastbound on 240 in a 2015 Buick LaCrosse.

Brown told Deputy Riley Houghton she stopped at the intersection and then began driving through the intersection when her vehicle was hit by Woods’. She said she did not have time to avoid the collision.

Woods told Houghton he also came to as top but he did not see Brown’s vehicle and proceeded through the intersection.

Houghton noted that the position of the vehicles suggested that Brown had entered the intersection first.

Brown’s vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Mark D. Davis, 57, Cloverdale, was southbound on U.S. 231 north of U.S. 40 in a 1999 Chevrolet pickup. Kourtney D. Hubbard, 21, Paragon, was also northbound in a 2016 Buick Enclave.

Davis told Deputy Boller traffic was slowing to a stop. He was able to slow down, but was rear-ended by Hubbard’s Buick.

Hubbard said she noticed that Davis was slowing very quickly and could not get her vehicle stopped in time to avoid a collision.

Hubbard’s vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

• At 4:14 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14, Emily R. Runnells, 25, Greencastle, was stopped southbound on County Road 200 West waiting to turn left into a driveway in a 2014 Jeep Compass. Tonya F. Beaman, 31, Greencastle, was traveling southbound in a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country.

Beaman told Deputy Boller she noticed Runnells stopped but could not avoid the collision.

Beaman’s vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to three dispatches and six medical runs.

• At 12:50 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 413 S. Locust St. The alarm was determined to have been activated unnecessarily due to unknown reasons. GFD reset the alarm and returned to station at 1:02 p.m.

• At 1:31 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to cooking at 313 E. Hanna St. GFD reset the alarm before returning to station at 1:43 p.m.

• At 2:48 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to cooking at 208 E. Olive St. GFD reset the alarm before returning to station at 3:02 p.m.

• At 7:36 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to smoking at 212 W. Franklin St. GFD reset the alarm before returning to station at 7:47 p.m.

• At At 12:56 a.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 208 E. Olive St. The alarm was determined to have activated unnecessarily due to unknown reasons. GFD reset the alarm before returning to station at 1:07 a.m.

• At 10:51 p.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to reports of a gas leak at 1105 N. Jackson St. (Putnam County Museum). Crews were unable to determine from where the gas-like smell stemmed, though it was determined no toxic gases were present after monitoring the air. GFD reset the alarm and returned to station at 11:07 p.m.

• At 9:01 a.m. on Monday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 807 S. College Ave. The alarm was determined to have activated unnecessarily due to unknown reasons. GFD returned to station at 9:18 a.m.

• At 9:43 a.m. on Monday, GFD performed an odor investigation 1360 Indianapolis Rd. Crews were unable to determine from where the gas-like smell stemmed, though it was determined no toxic gases were present after monitoring the air. GFD reset the alarm and returned to station at 10:06 a.m.

• At 10:57 a.m. on Monday, GFD performed an odor investigation at 2181 S. County Road 50 West. The gas-like smell reported was determined to have stemmed from a leaky pipe fitting on a new furnace which had been recently installed. GFD sealed the leak, ventilated the area and monitored the air before returning to station at 11:20 a.m.
