Eagles sweep county XC team titles
Rumley, Wilson individual winners
South Putnam swept the team titles on Tuesday on its home course in the Putnam County cross country championships.
Eagle standout Austin Rumley took the boys’ individual title by edging teammate Karl Egold in a race much more up in the air than the girls’ race — which was predictably won by undefeated Greencastle standout Emma Wilson.
The title was the third straight for Wilson, who currently has the state’s second best time of the season.
The Eagles showed great depth in winning the boys’ race in a blowout, placing three of the top five runners and having six total runners in the top 10.
South Putnam had 39 fewer team points than runnerup Cloverdale.
Behind Rumley and Egold was Steven Schnepp in fifth place, while the Eagles had a pack of Michael Crossman, Andrew Carr and Dru Bottorff placing seventh through ninth overall.
Greencastle’s Ben Gellman was the top non-South Putnam finisher in third, while Caleb Duncan led North Putnam by placing fifth
Cloverdale was led by Rylan Hall, who finished in sixth place.
The girls’ competition was closer, with the Eagles scoring 29 team points to outdistance runnerup Greencastle’s 43.
South Putnam’s depth showed up again, with four runners finishing in the top six.
Chelsie Edwards paced the Eagles by finishing second, earning her third straight all-county honor, while Greencastle’s Sydney Kallem was third.
Levi Vanihel, Lillie Stein and Ally Nichols finished fourth through sixth for the Eagles, while Cloverdale freshman Lily Monnett placed seventh.
The top seven runners in each race earned all-county honors.
The Putnam County middle school championships were also run on Tuesday, with Cloverdale’s Brady Koosman and Abby Nees repeating their 2016 titles.
South Putnam won the girls’ title, edging Cloverdale by four points. North Putnam won the boys’ title, easily defeating runnerup Cloverdale.
