Letter to the Editor

Have you thanked a police officer lately?

To the Editor:

Police officers risk their lives daily to protect the communities where we work, live and play. In today’s social climate, patrolling our streets has become a dangerous task.

The men and women who accept this challenge are everyday heroes. Thank you for doing a job most of us could not do. Officers rely on months and years of training to make quick decisions in life-and-death situations. Risking their lives for public safety is a challenge they accept daily when they put on the uniform.

I’ve recently had the opportunity to get to know some of our local Greencastle police officers. Of the 17 men and women who serve our community, many of them are local kids who grew up in Putnam County. Today they are fathers, mothers, someone’s child, grandchild or high school classmate from years past.

These trained officers choose to work in the community they call home. They could easily be working in Plainfield, Avon or Indianapolis making a more lucrative salary, but this is where they want to serve.

This is one of the many things that makes our police department unique. It’s not a coincidence that Greencastle is a safe place to live and raise a family. Our officers take pride in keeping our streets safe. They are dedicated to protecting your family and mine day in and day out.

When you choose a career that deals with the public, you will find yourself in the spotlight. Police officers around the country have experienced a great deal of bad publicity. It is my hope that the next time you see a local officer, please speak to them and thank them for a job well done.
