Clover spikers top Cubs for seventh in WIC

Cloverdale avenged two earlier losses to Greencastle on Thursday night by defeating the Tiger Cubs 3-2 in the Western Indiana Conference volleyball crossover round.

With the victory, the Clovers finished in seventh place and the Cubs claimed eighth.

The Clovers won the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-19, before the Tiger Cubs came back to win 25-22 and 25-20 to force the deciding fifth set.

Cloverdale won the final set 18-16 to clinch the victory.

“We knew it would be a battle,” Clover coach Traci Scott said. “The girls needed this win. We have lost some very close games this season and it feels great to get a tough victory heading into sectionals.”

The Clovers were led by the strong net attack of Kenzie Stoltz, Tori Combs and Justyce Monnett. Monnett also had a strong service performance with 17 points and four aces. Hannah Rady had 14 points and three aces, while Stoltz had nine points and three aces and Hailey Thomas had 32 digs and 7 points.

Combs had 10 blocks and is leading the conference in total blocks.

Greencastle’s offense was led by middle hitters Allison Stevens with 15 kills and Jada Amis with 13 kills. Jalyn Duff recorded 38 assists on the night.

Defensively, Maggie Meyer led with 27 digs, while Jalyn Duff added 10. Mackenzie Woodall also had 9 digs.

• Edgewood 3, South Putnam 2 (ninth place) — The Eagles fell to Edgewood in five sets by scores of 27-25, 19-25, 25-21, 21-25, and 8-14.

“Although we were unable to catch the win, the girls played well together. They made some great saves and had long volleys. I am very proud of the progress the girls have made throughout this season.”

The Eagle JV beat Edgewood in three sets by scores of 20-25, 25-19, 15-10.
