The Northview Knights powered past a banged-up South Putnam squad on Friday night with a 63-6 decision as both teams prepare for the conference crossover match-up next weekend.

The opening kickoff set the tone for the contest as the Knights’ Trevor Cook returned it for a touchdown. Only a block-in-the-back call deep in the Eagles’ territory kept the Knights off the board on the play. However, three plays later the Knights took a 7-0 lead as Michael Heading scored from four yards out for Northview.

The lead Knights built their lead in a whirlwind it seemed as the Eagles struggled to move the ball on their first drive and Northview took over at the South Putnam 41-yard line. Quarterback Trey Shaw found Trevor Cook for a 52-yard pass play and Allen Haire finished the two-play drive with a four-yard TD run and Northview was on top 14-0 less than four minutes into the Western Indiana Conference match-up.

The Eagles were able to gain some traction on their next drive built on a Christian Zeffel pass to Colin Adams and 10 yards from fullback Dalton Scott. However, the drive stalled at midfield as Northview got the ball back late in the first period.

The Knights resumed their march and put together a 13-play drive that culminated in a one-yard score by Dominick Eaglin, the first of two for the sophomore running back.

The following drive provided the Eagles with a highlight as Zeffel found Scott for an eight-yard gain and two plays later, Zeffel called his own number off tackle and raced through the line for a 56-yard gain down to the one-yard line. He scored on the next play as the Eagles got within 21-6.

The TD was the closest the Eagles would get however as Northview scored twice more before halftime, once on a 25-yard pass from Shaw to Cook and on a 56-yard scamper to paydirt for Shaw.

Northview led 35-6 at intermission, piling up 163 yards rushing on 19 carries as six different players got a carry.

The starters saw action on the first drive of the second half for Northview as Shaw scored on a three-yard TD run.

Substitutes played much of the rest of the contest for the Knights, but Northview was able to get a five-yard scoring run from freshman quarterback Keegan Garrison and a one-yard run by freshman running back Korbin Zeffel led the Eagles with 81 yards rushing and a touchdown.

  • Very difficult to compete at the level that South Putnam is trying to compete at. According to the John Harrell Football website, South Putnam is the only 1A school in the state of Indiana that doesn't compete against another 1A school. On top of that, they only compete against 2 schools in the 2A class. The rest are 3A and 4A schools. I don't make excuses for losses, but I am also realistic. Can't wait to watch Coach Aker and the team compete in the tournament. No team in the state has to do what they do. Proud to be an Eagle.
