Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated a pair of recent property-damage accidents.

• At 5:24 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, an apparent steering failure caused a four-vehicle crash on U.S. 36 west of Bainbridge.

Garrett D. Barr, 35, Brazil, told Deputy Riley Houghton he was eastbound just east of County Road 100 East in a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, at which point he believes his steering components failed, causing the truck to veer to the left.

Barr’s truck crossed left of center, into the path of Michael L. Dawson, 21, Greencastle, who was westbound in a 1998 Dodge Ram. Dawson could not avoid colliding with Barr’s truck.

Shanna C. Wiley, 31, Greencastle, was also westbound directly behind Dawson’s truck in a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze. She saw the first collision and tried steering to the right but could not avoid the collision.

Bethany A. Karanovich, 51, Clinton, was eastbound in a 2014 Jeep Wrangler and saw the other three vehicles collide but could not avoid an additional collision.

Barr’s truck and Dawson’s truck were towed.

Dawson was charged with misdemeanor driving with a suspended license as well as driving without proof of financial responsibility.

Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

• At 4:34 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, Joseph A. Short Jr., 42, Brazil, was westbound on U.S. 40 in a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier.

Short told Deputy Houghton his cell phone fell and the next thing he knew, he had wrecked.
