Banner Graphic: How did you first get interested in soccer?

Brody Watson: “Growing up, I started playing as a little kid in youth league. It was fun just running up and down the field acting crazy and kicking the ball. Later, I got invited to play for the Putnam County Youth Soccer Association travel team and were winless that year. We were awful. A good thing out of that season was that I started playing in goal, and I’m very thankful for that so I can be where I am today.”

BG: What do you like about playing goalie?

BW: “It’s a feeling that other people on the field can’t have. If they score, it’s your fault; if you make a save, you’re the hero. I kind of like that pressure. I like flying through the air and being the hero. It can be lonely back there, but that’s why I have to talk to my teammates and encourage them. I always have to keep them occupied by talking to them, to keep myself occupied.”

BG: Your team has recorded 13 shutouts this year in 16 victories. How much of that is because of you, and how much because of your back line defense?

BW: “The people in front of me are the biggest factor in soccer defense. I cannot thank the people in front of me this season. From last year to this season, we have improved so much in that area.”

BG: You have played basketball in the past, but are just focusing on soccer this year. What will you be doing when the season’s over in soccer?

BW: “I’m going to play for the Indiana Fire Juniors [at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy] along with my best friend, Seth Nichols [the team’s leading scorer last year who is only playing for the Fire this year]. We are both going to be commuting up to Westfield every day of the week except Friday to play for them. We hope it’s good for helping us both to get to play soccer in college.”

BG: Do you have a college picked yet?

BW: “As of now, IUPUI is the best chance for me. I have been talking to the coach, and I think it would be a good place for me academically and athletically. I am also considering the University of Indianapolis.”

BG: What major and career are you thinking about?

BW: “I want to go to sports management, and help to run a team like the Colts, the Pacers or the Indy 11.”

BG: What else do you do at school besides soccer?

BW: “I have gotten good grades, and I am well-liked at school. I don’t want to sound cocky or anything, but I feel a lot of the students, teachers and staff like me. I try to put smiles on people’s faces using my stupidity sometimes. That’s just how I am; I just like talking to everyone and be myself. I like making other people happy. I just kind of do my own thing, and go with the flow.”

BG: What do you do outside of school?

BW: “I like to hang out with my friends, go watch movies and go out to eat. We like to just hang out and talk about life and how we’re doing. I like scary movies and thrillers. I watch a little bit of ‘South Park’ and SportsCenter on TV. I like watching all kinds of sports on TV.”

BG: What is something that you have never done before that you would like to do someday?

BW: “I would like to travel out to the West. I would like to go out and explore and see what the world has to offer. I‘ve been to most of the states in the East, but I haven’t been out West yet. My uncle used to go hunting in Idaho all the time, and he says it’s really beautiful there. It’s one of his favorite places to hunt and for great scenery.”

BG: What is your biggest fear?

BW: “Puppets and dolls. I don’t like either one of those. My great-grandma moved out here from West Virginia when I was about 10 or 11 years old, and she brought a five-foot realistic live doll that could walk on its own. That made the fear even worse. It’s very lifelike, and freaky.”

BG: What are your favorite and least favorite foods?

BW: “I hate pickles. They are gross. I don’t like mustard, either. I can eat about anything except those.”

BG: Do you see yourself living in Indiana someday, or somewhere else?

BW: “I want to live in a big city. I’ve always been attracted to what the big cities have to offer. There is always something to do, and there are always people around. Being by myself is not fun for me. I like being interactive with others.”

BG: Have you had a good experience at Greencastle High School?

BW: “It’s been an unbelievable experience. People think ‘it’s Greencastle’ and a school that nobody knows about, and for me it’s been an awesome experience. My favorite memories have been about soccer. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have soccer. It’s always kept me busy, and there are always things to improve upon. The teachers and the community have all been great. When I go off to college, wherever I wind up, I will never forget about this town.”
