Scammers using 911 Dispatch number

Saturday, October 14, 2017

The recent trend in mimicking local numbers for scam phone calls struck a local emergeny agency this week.

On Thursday, at least two local residents got a call from what appeared to be Putnam County 911 Dispatch on their caller ID.

Not only did the calls have the name of the agency, it also came from 653-5115, the non-emergency number for dispatch.

Despite the appearance of being dispatch, the callers were asked to buy lottery tickets or endorse airline mileage.

The reports were made to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department.

Residents are reminded that if such a call sounds suspicious or too good to be true, it probably is. Phone scammers are constantly changing their methods in an effort to stay a step ahead of authorities and citizens.
