Described as "the definition of sonic joy," this high-voltage ensemble's inventive program of traditional Afro-Peruvian music, transformed by Gabriel Alegr'a's personal synthesis of folkloric rhythms and jazz, has led to a signature accomplishment: developing the band's patented blend of deep scholarship and playfulness into an experience that conveys black music from coastal Perú as a way of life to its audiences. For this performance, in celebration of the ensemble's latest release "Diablo en Brooklyn," a company of Afro-Peruvian dancers join Alegr'a on Kresge stage.

Chow downtown and start this South American evening off with a special Peruvian-inspired menu by Wasser Brewing Company, 102 E. Franklin (Reservations suggested: 844-WASSER-1).

The featured work on this ArtFest performance will be The City, a new piece by American composer Kevin Puts. Co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall, the Baltimore Symphony and California's Cabrillo Festival of New Music, it was selected for ArtsFest after DePauw Orchestra conductor Orcenith Smith heard the west coast premiere at the Cabrillo Festival and was inspired to secure the first college performance of the piece at DePauw. The work centers on the historic development of the City of Baltimore with images by videographer James Bartolomeo. As the piece unfolds, turmoil climaxes into fitful silence, followed by a developing vision of reconciliation.
