‘Song of Songs’ New Beginnings Concert

Monday, October 30, 2017

The First Christian Church at 110 S. Indiana St. in Greencastle will host its second annual New Beginnings Concert Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.

Jason Asbury, a native of Putnam County and DePauw University, will perform the concert on organ featuring both DPU students, local high and middle school students and community members. The concert will be centered around song of songs, which will look at music that talks about music.

Greencastle High School student Ethan Tuggle will play a set of vocal arrangements on acoustic guitar. DPU students will explore the ironic and humorous sides of self-reflective music. Levi Hoffman ironically sings “Vocal Modesty,” while Connor Locke and Serenna Jones split the Bernstein cycle “I hate music!”

Small chamber vocal ensembles such as DeBoys and students from the School of Music sing Baroque composer Henry Purcell and The Real Group, among others. One of the highlights of the event is that the concert is part of a re-premiere set of performances of Grammy-winning composer Libby Larsen’s sacred vocal works, “Lord, Make Me an Instrument.”

Proceeds from the concert will go toward. Asbury’s charity, Asbury Endowment for the Arts, which strives to support art and cultural performances and exhibitions in Putnam County. This grant has awarded organizations such as the Putnam County Playhouse, Impressions, Greencastle High School’s student run literary and art magazine, New Providence Church music outreach program and more.
