CLOVERDALE -- The Cloverdale Lions Club has presented Larry Haltom with the 22nd annual Cloverdale Civic Award.

Haltom received the award as a thank you for the numerous volunteer hours he has devoted to the betterment of the Cloverdale community.

Nominations for the award come from the general public.

Haltom served many years on the Cloverdale Community Housing Board, including a term as president. He is also active in the Hurst Collins Post of the American Legion. He has been a part of the honor guard for many years at parades in Cloverdale and at many veterans’ funerals. Also, he has been the main caretaker of the American flags that line Main Street in Cloverdale.

As a longtime member of the Cloverdale Lions Club, Haltom has been involved in helping connect the club to the community.

He has served as the president of the Lions Club on two occasions, and he has also served as the secretary. He was also a founding member of the Civic Award Committee 22 years ago.

Haltom was the first Cloverdale Lion to receive the WP WOODS award, which is the Indiana Lions Foundation’s highest honor, and he was the second Cloverdale Lion to be honored as a Melvin Jones Fellow, which is Lions International Foundation’s highest honor. He has worked many hours helping to raise funds to help the club, and he has also spent many hours doing vision screening for students at the local schools.

As one nomination form stated, “Larry can always be counted on to lend a hand. Whether it be utilizing his vast experience as an electrician, providing manpower, or simply by giving a smile and an encouraging word, he is always eager to help others in any way he can. Not only is he a hard worker, but those that know him will agree that he is just a genuinely nice person and he cares deeply about our community.”

Haltom joins previous Civic Award recipients Kay Gedert, Lita Sandy, Donna Fidler, Dewey Garrett, Todd Lewis, Kerry Shepherd, Joyce Johnson, Mona Smith, Bob Hostetter, Don Walton, Jeff Rich, Rosemary (Davis) Berry, Jack Davis, Dr. Keith Ernst, Eric Hayman, Vera Hughes, Adeline Knoy, Bill Henson, Judy Whitaker, Rod Garrett, Norv Gottula and Wayne Sutherlin.

In a recent ceremony, Haltom was presented a plaque by Todd Lewis, chairman of the Cloverdale Community Civic Award Committee, and his name has been inscribed on a plaque that is displayed in the Cloverdale Town Hall.
