James H. Smithers

James H. Smithers, 85, of Peoria, Ill., passed away at 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017 at Unity Point Health Methodist in Peoria surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on June 19, 1932 in Greencastle to Ollie and Lucille (Custis) Smithers.

He married the love of his life, Carolee Clodfelter, on April 3, 1953 in Greencastle. She preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 2017.

Also preceding him in death were his parents, one brother, Herb Smithers, and one sister, Rita Berry.

Surviving are his three children, Jim Smithers Jr. of Peoria, Becky (Dave) Cannon of Peoria, and Brenda (Raymond) Coulson of Bartonville; five grandchildren, Andy (Brandi) Ledbetter, Zac Ledbetter, Bradley Clough, Britnee Clough and Shay Smithers; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Opal (Dallas) Sutherlin, and Wanda (Phil) O'Neal; and also included, Keith Berry and Nettie Smithers.

James worked as an adjudicator for the state of Illinois.

He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Indiana University basketball fan. He enjoyed watching all kinds of college sports and playing cards.

He was a member of the Glen Oak Christian Church.

James especially loved being with his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.

James served in the United States Air Force.

A memorial service was conducted Saturday, Nov. 4 at Glen Oak Christian Church in Peoria. Pastor Randy Williams officiated.

Another memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Nov. 11 at the First Church of Nazarene in Greencastle with a visitation from 10 a.m. to noon. Pastor Robert Muncie will officiate.

Burial of ashes will take place at Union Chapel Cemetery in Morton.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Glen Oak Christian Church CWF.

Cremation rites will be accorded through Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, Ill.
