Free prostate screening offered Nov. 28 at PCH

The Putnam County Hospital Cancer Center will be holding its annual free prostate screening on Tuesday, Nov. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon and 5-7 p.m.

Who should consider this free screening? If you are male, 50 years of age or older or African American male, 45 years of age or older, or are male and have a father/brother with prostate cancer and 45 years of age or older.

Included in this screening is a prostate exam at no charge. Individuals can also receive a PSA blood test for an additional fee of only $10.

The screening will be performed in the Cancer Center, located on the second floor of Putnam County Hospital.

Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of male cancer-related death in the United States. About one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. Your chances increase if you have a family history of the cancer.

About one in three men with a close relative who has/had prostate cancer are diagnosed, and the risk jumps to 83 percent if two close relatives – father or brother -- have been diagnosed. Early detection is key.
