Cloverdale School Board accepts STEM grant for elementary

CLOVERDALE -- The Cloverdale School Board accepted a $6,250 STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) grant from the Owen County Community Foundation to the Cloverdale Elementary School (CES) during its regular meeting on Monday.

“We appreciate Mrs. (CES Principal Mary) Elkins’ efforts in completing the application process and receiving the award,” Superintendent Greg Linton said. “It’ll be used for K-2 STEM development at the elementary in conjunction with the Knoy program.”

Specifically, the grant will benefit the Knoy Center’s Clover-U program, which promotes collegiate education.

In other developments:

-- Absences: JaceAnn Trout was absent.

-- Claims: The board approved claims at a total of $721,729.54, a decrease of $12,127.05 from last month and an increase of $25,202.49 from the year’s average.

-- Collections: The board approved hiring Kinum Co. to handle collecting overdue textbook rental and other fees.

President Vivian Whitaker said there are a “significant number” of these, and Superintendent Linton added that before this Cloverdale was the only school corporation without a collection agency. The cost is expected to be $6 for every letter and other efforts sent to a family.

-- Personnel: The board approved the following personnel report:

-- Resignation: Terry Monnett (CES/CMS cafeteria)

-- Employment: Mary Mann (temporary CMS special education); Mark Deckard, Benita Deckard, Cassandra Britton, Nicole Dubois, Fred Walden, Shayli Cassity and Kelli Hovious (substitute bus drivers)

-- Volunteer: Brian Siddons (CHS assistant wrestling coach); Jason Wilson (assistant boys’ basketball coach); Kyle Walter and Andy Tyler (assistant girls’ basketball coaches) and Michael Glassburn (assistant boys’ and girls’ basketball coach)

The Cloverdale School Board’s next regular meeting is set for Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Arthur C. Johnson Administration Building at 401 E. Logan St. in Cloverdale.
