Ahead of the Curve

Tuesday, November 21, 2017
At the request of local officials and citizens, the Indiana Department of Transportation delivers signs of tangible change to the Waterworks Hill area of U.S. 231 Tuesday morning. As announced last week, crews spent part of Tuesday morning installing a series of chevron signs as opposed to a single curve sign to mark the dangerous downhill, left-hand turn just north of the Walnut Creek Bridge. Additionally, crews installed signs marking the new, extended 45-mph zone, which for southbound traffic now begins about halfway down the hill, as opposed to at the bottom of the hill on the south side of the bridge. Sheriff Scott Stockton, Mayor Bill Dory and Fire Chief John Burgess, all of whom were part of the process of taking the problem area to INDOT, kept an eye on the morning work while sheriff’s deputies controlled traffic to ensure the safety of INDOT workers.
