PREP ROUNDUP: Eagles bounce back with 60-30 win

NEW MARKET — South Putnam’s girls’ basketball team rebounded from its first loss of the season on Saturday night in the Putnam County Classic to defeat Southmont 60-30 on Monday night.

Lillie Stein led all scorers with 23 points for the Eagles, while Miranda Bieghler and Lexi Vanihel each added nine.

South Putnam led 8-3 after one quarter and 21-12 at halftime against the Mounties (now 3-4), before breaking out with 18 points in the third period to take a 39-23 lead.

The Eagles added 21 points in the fourth period, including nine from Stein and six from freshman Chloe Custis.

“We had a slow start,” South Putnam coach Brian Gardner said. “We controlled the game from the opening tip, and we played well.”

The Eagles improved to 4-1 and are idle until hosting South Vermillion on Nov. 29.

In seventh-grade basketball:

Cloverdale 49, Eminence 4 — Clayton Peterson led the Clovers with 22 points.

Cloverdale made 18 steals which translated into 36 points on layups.

“All the boys played hard defense,” coach Billy Boyette said.

Levi Hilton added seven points for Cloverdale, while Conner Silcox and Grant Gentry added six each and Eli Kelley and Scottie McGuire each had four.

Swimming

Eagle boys win triangular — North Putnam hosted South Putnam and Tri-West for triangular meets on Monday.

South Putnam won the boys’ meet with 129 team points, while Tri-West had 102 and North Putnam had 77.

Tri-West won the girls’ event with 124 points. South Putnam was second with 106, while North Putnam had 80.

Jared Seidler of South Putnam was a double-winner in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events, and also swam the first leg of the winning 200-yard relay team.

Lauren Lotzow of North Putnam won the girls’ one-meter diving competition.

Alex Fanning of South Putnam won the 100-yard breast stroke and also ran a leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay team.
