Vogel paces Tigers past Rose-Hulman
David Vogel scored a career-high 25 points, and DePauw defeated Rose-Hulman 68-66 on Wednesday.
Vogel, whose previous career-high of 22 came against Franklin in the team’s season opener, went 8-for-11 from the field and 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. He also went 4-for-4 from the line, including two clutch free throws late, and added four rebounds, one assist and one block to his line.
Vogel led the Tigers with 16 points at the half as DePauw shot a blistering 59 percent from the floor in the first half alone to take a 43-31 lead. However, the Tigers cooled down in the second half as Rose-Hulman held a 35-25 advantage for the final 20 minutes.
The Fighting Engineers scored the game’s first four points and led for the first 1:44 until DePauw started an 11-0 run that allowed them to lead for the remainder of the game. DePauw also shot 53 percent from 3-point range in the first half.
The start of second half was a different story for the Tigers. After Luke Steinhart connected from long range to begin the half, DePauw missed its next 11 shots and didn’t score another field goal until the 12:54 mark when Vogel connected on a layup. The layup brought DePauw’s lead back up to six at 48-42.
A Vogel 3-pointer brought the lead up to seven with 11:12 remaining at 51-44, the highest it would get for the remainder of the game.
Rose-Hulman was able to tie it at 61-61 with 1:28 remaining, but on DePauw’s next possession Cris Burrough sank a 3-pointer from the corner to reclaim the lead with a minute left. Burrough finished with a season-high 11 points off the bench.
DePauw improves to 2-2 overall, while Rose-Hulman drops to 0-5. The Tigers will travel to Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday to open NCAC play.
