No. 15 DePauw women win big; Tiger men lose to No. 16 OWU

DePauw guard Sydney Kopp scored a game-high 27 including 18 in the first quarter to lead #15/18 DePauw to a 75-41 North Coast Athletic Conference win over Allegheny. The Tigers moved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC, while the Gators dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in NCAC play.

Kopp hit all seven of her first-quarter field goal tries including four 3-pointers. Her trey with 41 seconds left in the stanza capped a 16-2 run that expanded a 2-point lead to 16 on the way to a 30-14 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

DePauw led by as many as 18 in the second quarter before heading to the intermission with a 41-27 advantage. The Tigers put the game away in the third after scoring the first 13 points to push the lead to 54-27.

Kopp’s 27 was two shy of her career best and included 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range. Claire Keefe added 13 in the win. Kopp also shared rebounding honors with Melinda Franke as each grabbed seven. DePauw held a 52-25 advantage on the boards including 23 on the offensive glass for a 30-7 edge in second-chance points. Maya Howard dished out a game-high five assists.

Zoe Soilis paced Allegheny with eight points and Madison Caufield grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Tigers shot 41.8 percent from the floor including 54.8 percent in the first half.

DePauw travels to Wittenberg on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. NCAC game.

No. 16 Ohio Wesleyan 105, DePauw 71 (men) — At Delaware, Ohio, Ohio Wesleyan showed why it has one of the better teams in the nation on Saturday.

Nate Axelrod led the 16th-ranked Battling Bishops with 29 points and eight assists.

For DePauw, Jack VandeMerkt was the only one to reach double figures in scoring with 12. Andrew Kus and David Vogel each had eight points, and James Clarke added seven points off the bench.

Both teams shot over 50 percent from the floor, but Ohio Wesleyan went 23-of-48 from beyond the arch (48 percent) while DePauw went 7-of-20 (35 percent).

Ohio Wesleyan also took 18 more shot attempts than DePauw, going 40-of-74 (54 percent) to DePauw’s 28-of-56 (50 percent).

The Battling Bishops barely got the edge in rebounding 34-30 and only committed four turnovers, while forcing 14.

DePauw outscored Ohio Wesleyan in bench points 39-31 and in points in the paint 36-30. However, Ohio Wesleyan took advantage in second chance points 13-0 and points off turnovers 20-9.

Ohio Wesleyan turned a 5-5 game at the 16:30 mark into a 30-11 game 6:17 later, hitting five 3-pointers in that span. They took a 58-28 lead into the half.

The two teams played closer in the second half with Ohio Wesleyan scoring 47 to DePauw’s 43. Ohio Wesleyan’s largest lead came at 46 with 10:53 remaining.

DePauw drops to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the NCAC. Ohio Wesleyan is 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

The Tigers return home Wednesday to face Wittenberg.
