PREP ROUNDUP: Cougars sweep triangular swim meets

BAINBRIDGE — North Putnam swept a pair of triangular varsity swimming meets on Tuesday night, defeating Owen Valley and West Vigo.

North Putnam had 152 points to win the girls’ meet, while Owen Valley had 108 and West Vigo had 27.

In the boys’ meet, North Putnam had 145 points to 103 for West Vigo and 75 for Owen Valley.

With the whole Cougar roster swimming in the girls’ event, the Cougars won all but one event.

The 200 medley relay A team of Gabby Louie, Grace Elmore, Krissy Dill and Abby Spencer continued to drop time, swimming a 2:13.49, an improvement of 1.25 seconds from Saturday’s meet.

Spencer won the 200 free, with Tori Louie finishing second. Dill won the 200 IM and finished second in the 100 fly.

Maddie Trotter dropped more time in her 50 free. After going below 30.00 last Saturday for the first time this season, she was able to shave nearly another half second off her time. Trotter also anchored the 400 free relay B team and swam a leg in the 200 free relay, helping the team finish first.

Gabby Carney showed improvement in her 50 free time as well, swimming a 34.97. Her leg on the 200 free relay team and swimming breast on the 200 medley B team added points to the Cougar scoreboard.

Divers Savannah Couch and Lauren Lotzow had solid performances on the board. Couch also helped the 200 medley relay B team to a solid finish and added points for her swim in the 100 breaststroke.

Lotzow also did some backstroking on the 200 medley relay B team, as well as the individual 100 backstroke.

Spencer continues to chip away at her 500 free time, easily winning the event in 6:15.80.

Gabby Louie won the 100 backstroke and she opened the race on the winning 200 free relay team.

Grace Elmore won the 100 free and 100 breast, as well as anchoring the winning 400 free relay A team.

The boys’ team was helped by the addition of juniors Mason Allen and Dustin Novak to the roster, allowing a second relay team to be formed.

Allen also swam the 100 free in a 1:03.86 dropping 6.50 seconds from Saturday’s meet, while Novak finished second in the 100 breast in a time of 1:23.78.

Tyler Thompson had two more consistent, strong swims in the 200 free and 500 free, winning both events, as well as swimming back in the 200 medley relay and a leg in the 400 free relay.

Matthew Trotter won the 200 IM and finished third in the 100 fly. His performances on the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay helped both A teams win their events, respectively.

Kyle Young dominated the 100 fly by swimming a 1:01.19 and swam his first 100 breast for the season, winning the in a time of 1:11.45.

Nathan Ballard handily won the 50 free. His second time in the 100 back reflected a 1.34 second time drop. His solid anchor swims on the 200 medley relay A and 400 freestyle A teams, helped secure the wins for both teams.

Matthew Ballard tried his hand in the 200 IM, finishing second in a time of 2:44.25. His efforts on the B teams in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay helped score points, while his position on the 200 freestyle relay helped with the win.

Dagan Everman anchored the 200 medley relay B team for the first time, with a solid performance aiding in the Cougar win.

Jacob Farrington swam two new events, finishing second in the 200 free establishing a time of 2:20.55, finishing in second place. His 100 back stroke came in at 1:27.00, and he also anchored anchoring the 200 freestyle relay team and 400 freestyle B team.

Coach Jeremy Tidd was happy with the performance of both teams.

He said, “The Cougars fought hard to battle being tired and swam fast. We had a few interesting swims this evening, as we are still trying to find out some events to fill. All in all, everyone did what they were supposed to do and swam great. Still have some work to do, but I’ve seen some great improvements since starting with the Cougars just a few weeks ago.”

Wrestling

Greencastle 59, North Vermillion 15 — The Tiger Cubs lost just two matches, while Mark Roberts, Jake Overstreet, Brach Carrington, Cauy Thomas, Michael Anderson and Trace Thomas all won their matches by pin.

The team travels to Zionsville on Saturday for the Eagle Invitational.

Basketball

North Putnam 43, Cascade 36 (eighth grade boys) — The Cougars broke a two-game losing streak, led in scoring by Zach Huff and Ellis Lyons.

Cascade hit a game-winning 3-pointer late in the game to win the B game 26-23.
