DePauw splits pair with Wittenberg
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — DePauw, ranked 15th in the latest coaches’ poll and 16th by D3hoops.com, moved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play following a 61-47 win at Wittenberg.
The host Tigers dropped to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in NCAC play.
DePauw trailed by two in the opening period, but scored the final nine points of the first and the first three of the second to grab an 18-8 lead. Wittenberg was within one at 22-21 before DePauw closed the half with a Maya Howard 3-pointer and an Emily Budde jumper to make it 27-21.
The margin was still six early in the third before Claire Keefe hit a basket and Howard added four free throws to push the lead to 40-28 with 4:28 left in the third.
Keefe led DePauw with 19, while Howard added 18 and a team-high four assists. Kylie Morris paced the team with seven rebounds.
• Wittenberg 77, DePauw 64 (men) — DePauw and Wittenberg were tied heading into the final 13:21 of Wednesday’s North Coast Athletic Conference game, but Wittenberg sparked a run and never looked back as they took a 77-64 win at Neal Fieldhouse.
Wittenberg remains undefeated in the young season at 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC, while DePauw drops to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Jack VandeMerkt led DePauw with 13 points and five rebounds. David Vogel scored 11, and freshman Nick Felke scored a career-high 10.
