PREP ROUNDUP: Shark swimmers compete well; Cougar wrestlers second

Greencastle hosted Crawfordsville for a pair of high school swimming meets on Monday night, with the Athenians coming out on top in both events.

Crawfordsville won the boys’ meet by a 111-72 score and the girls’ meet by a 104-81 margin.

“It’s always a great night for swimming when the Athenians come to town,” Greencastle coach Kent Menzel said. “We have a long history of spirited competition with Crawfordsville, and this meet was no exception.

“Our Sharks battled to the very end, but just did not have enough firepower to overcome a strong late-meet surge by Coach Kevin Hedrick’s squad.”

In the girls’ race, Menzel saw “very strong” swimming from a freshman quartet of Katie White, Sydney Anderson, Paige Kaiser and Zoe Weltz.

“Throughout the meet those four recorded multiple lifetime bests and scored well for the team,” he said.

For the boys, Menzel said GHS senior Preston Headley, junior Ben Parsons and sophomore Sal Martoglio were very “impressive,” also swimming well from start to finish of the meet.

“Headley’s 100 breaststroke win was a highlight for the night,” Menzel said.

Wrestling

• Cougars place second — North Putnam hosted the Annual Kenny Kerns Invitational on Saturday, finishing second to Crawfordsville.

The Cougars won their pool by defeating Rockville, Covington and Lafayette Central Catholic.

Individual outstanding wrestlers for North Putnam after pool play were Shawn McLaughlin, Terran Wittig, A.J. Ezman, Jacob Scott and Dillon Binnion.

Ezman, Wittig, and Scott finished the day as overall champions.

• Cubs 5th at Zionsville — Greencastle faced some tough competition at the Eagle Invite at Zionsville High School on Saturday.

Brach Carrington went 4-0 on the day to win his weight class.

Austin Stockall had a great day and finished second at 3-1. Logan Carrington, Cauy Thomas and Michael Anderson each finished third while Jacob Baker, Nick Sabin and Cade Winslow finished fourth.

The team will compete in the county tournament on Thursday at North Putnam at 5:30.

• Wilson wins at Northview — South Putnam competed in the Northview Invitational on Saturday.

Austin Wilson won the 138-pound weight class to lead the Eagles.
