PREP ROUNDUP: Cougars play better in defeat; SP loses tough one at Cascade

Wednesday, December 20, 2017

MECCA — North Putnam fell 32-22 to Riverton Parke on Tuesday night in girls’ varsity basketball, but coach Jarrod Duff thought his Cougars played one of their best games in a while.

“We played defense with a lot of effort and energy tonight,” he said. “That was true especially in the first half. We had a bad stretch to open up the second half and they went on a run.”

The Cougars led 5-4 after one quarter and 14-8 at halftime, before the Panthers scored the first eight points of the third period.

“Our effort and energy during that stretch were not like they need to be,” he said. “After that, we got settled in more at the defensive end. I thought we were a little tentative on the offensive end, but we got 40 shot attempts tonight and only turned the ball over 15 times.”

RP took a 24-18 lead after three quarters as the Cougars were only able to get eight second-half points.

“At times, out ball movement was really good. We just struggled to make open shots. We played well enough to win. If you told me we would hold them to 32 points tonight, I would have said that we will win the game. We need to rebound better, both offensively and defensively, but the bottom line is that we have to start making some shots. Every phase of our game has improved so much. If we start making some shots, we will be a different team.”

Hannah Sims led North Putnam with nine points.
