GCSC board sets calendars for next two school years

Thursday, December 21, 2017

Having coordinated the dates with Area 30 Career Center and its other member schools, Greencastle Schools Superintendent Jeff Hubble gave his recommendation this week for next year’s school calendar.

Then, in a mildly suprising move, Hubble also recommended the calendar for the 2019-20 school year as well.

Both were approved unanimously by board members.

“I’d like to be a risk taker,” Hubble said prior to recommending the second year’s calendar. He noted there is a chance that state guidelines for school calendars could change in that time, causing a change for GCSC, but he is comfortable with the move.

Notable days in 2018-19 will be the first student day on Aug. 8, fall break on Oct. 13-21, winter break from Dec. 22-Jan. 7 and spring break on March 23-31.

The last day of school will be May 23, followed by graduation on Friday, May 24.

The 2019-20 school year follows a similar pattern, with school starting on Aug. 7, fall break Oct. 12-20, winter break Dec. 21-Jan. 6 and spring break March 21-29.

The final day of the 2019-20 school year will be May 21, with graduation on May 22.

The board also attended to a number of personnel items, including the resignation of Greencastle High School Spanish teacher Meredith Wade, effective at the end of the semester.

Approved as Wade’s replacement was Sydney Dickerson.

Other personnel items included:

• Resignations: Kevin Rowe as GHS boys’ tennis coach, Margaret “Peg” Rose as Tzouanakis instructional assistant and Tricia Knight as GHS custodian.

• Hires: Robert Gibson as Deer Meadow special needs teacher, Jill Nichols as Tzouanakis instructional assistant, Morgan Shoopman as Deer Meadow noon aide and Brad Mellinger and Andrew Krouse as substitute bus drivers.

• Angela Garl transferred from part-time to full-time bus driver.

• Extra-curriculars: Ian Pingleton and Damon Carrington hired as GHS assistant wrestling coaches, Jessica Lenihan approved as GHS volunteer assistant girls’ basketball coach and John Parmley approved as GHS volunteer assistant boys’ golf coach.
