Mildred ‘Millie’ See

Mildred (Millie) See passed away on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017.

Born on Dec. 28, 1918 in Pierceton, Ind., she was the daughter of Franz S. and Lena Melissa Ward Knull. Shortly after her birth the family moved to North Manchester.

She later graduated from Central High School and Manchester College, now Manchester University. After teaching two years in Whitley County, in 1942 she married John H. See of Macy, Ind. She taught in Deedsville and Macy until the family moved to Greencastle in 1953.

She was a stay-at-home mom for several years while the children were young. Then she served for 10 years and administrative secretary at Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church.

In 1973 she resumed her teaching career at Greencastle High School where she was head of the business department and served a two-year term as president of the Classroom Teachers’ Association, retiring in 1985.

Following her retirement she volunteered for 20 years in the business office at Putnam County Hospital.

She was a member of Gobin Church and Bethel Circle, Putnam County Hospital Guild, Friends of the Library, the Putnam County Museum, and both the local and state Retired Teachers’ Association. She also held memberships in Delta Kappa Gamma and Delta Theta Tau.

Surviving are sons Tom (Betsy) and Kevin (Linda); daughter Melissa (Dale) Johnson; 10 grandchildren, Tracy (Jerry) Grimes, Carrie (Mike) Meyer, Jason See, Julie (Aaron) Toombs, David (Sarah) See, Scott (Christina) See, Jeff (Heidi) See, Jeremy, Tyler (Billie) and Sam Johnson; 12 great grandchildren, Madison and Cole Grimes, Grant, Avery and Lily Meyer, Nolan and Caroline See, Brooklyn and Tanner Toombs, Bradly and Ryan See and Tessa Johnson; and great-great-grandchild Auria See.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband John; son Louie; daughter-in-law Carol; three sisters and their husbands, Gladys Lambert, Evelyn Conkling, and Rosemary Hippensteel; and two nephews Kenny Lambert and David Conkling.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, Jan. 5 at Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of service.

Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
