North Putnam sweeps Cloverdale

BAINBRIDGE — North Putnam swept a pair of Putnam County semifinal junior high basketball games on Monday night to advance to Wednesday’s championship games.

The Cougars jumped out to a 25-4 lead at halftime in the seventh-grade game and coasted to a 46-18 victory.

In the eighth-grade game, the Cougars trailed 21-14 at halftime but had a huge third quarter to pull out a 48-42 victory.

The Cougars got balanced scoring in the seventh-grade game, with eight different players denting the scoring column.

Five different players scored in the first half, led by nine from Christian Judy.

Judy added four more points in the third period, as the Cougars led 32-8 at the final stop.

Malachi Fish scored six points in the fourth period for North Putnam, tying Judy for game-high scoring honors with 14.

Levi Hilton had five points to lead the physically-outmanned Clovers.

Cloverdale’s Kyle Thomas had 11 of his game-high 24 points in the first half, as the Clovers led 12-8 at the first stop and 21-14 at intermission.

Cloverdale utilized a 2-3 zone defense in the first half, while North Putnam played man-to-man.

The Cougars switched to a 1-3-1 zone in the second half, and the desired results were achieved.

Cloverdale was forced into turnovers on the first three possessions of the half, and the Cougars cashed in by scoring the first 10 points of the half.

Zach Huff and Braden Allen took turns scoring the first five baskets, with Huff getting three hoops and Allen two.

After a trey by Cloverdale’s Nate Nees, it was time for Ellis Lyons to take over. The Cougar sharp-shooter buried three straight treys from almost the exact same spot on the court to immediately put his team up 33-24.

After a Thomas basket, Huff hit a trey at the third-quarter buzzer and the Cougars suddenly had a 36-24 lead.

Allen hit a basket and Lyons hit another trey — his fourth of six on the night — to extend the lead to 41-26.

Cloverdale then switched to a full-court press, and Thomas led a comeback. After a Brady Koosman trey, Thomas scored nine points in a 90-second span to cut the gap to 45-40 with 1:35 to play.

The Clovers could get no closer.
