The Monday meeting of the Greencastle School Board was the sort that board members could really learn to enjoy.

The board had little to consider in the way of tough decisions but did have the joy of accepting nearly $10,000 in donations from local businesses, organizations and individuals.

Among the donations were:

• $5,000 from Greencastle Christian Church to Tzouanakis Intermediate School for its backpack food program. This comes on the heels of a $5,000 donation from Co-Alliance in November.

The program sends home backpacks of food with those students who may not be getting enough food on days they are not at school. Similar programs are already in place at Deer Meadow Primary and Ridpath Primary.

• $2,000 from Walmart Distribution Center to Greencastle High School physical education department.

The donations will send all freshman PE students to an Indy Fuel hockey game, an event which will have a focus on “Wellness for Life.”

• $500 from Farm Bureau Insurance and Chicago’s Pizza to the GHS athletic department.

With the donation, the two business will be featured on the LED screen of the new scoreboard in McAnally Center. The opportunity is also open to other businesses.

• $988 from Rob and Tammy York to the GHS boys’ basketball team.

The team’s warm-up pants had been about 15 years old, so the donation bought a new set of purple and white striped warm-ups.

• $995 from the GHS All-Sports Booster Club to the GHS athletic department for window decorations.

Superintendent Jeff Hubble was not aware of the exact details of the decorations and GHS Principal Russ Hesler was not in attendance due to the illness. However, Hubble said he believes it is for decorative window clings that will turn the front windows of McAnally into one-way windows.

In other business:

• The board officially accepted the previously-announced resignation of board member Denise Sigworth.

Sigworth was not in attendance, but both Hubble and board president Mike White thanked her for her service.

White announced that the board is seeking a replacement. Applicants must be residents of the City of Greencastle and at least 21 years old.

Interested applicants should mail their letters of interest and resumés to Greencastle Schools Central Office, c/o President Mike White, 1002 Mill Pond Lane, Greencastle, IN 46135.

The letters should be received by Feb. 1.

The board will convene a special meeting in February to choose Sigworth’s replacement, who will serve through June 30, 2020.

At that point, the Greencastle City Council will choose who will fill the position for the next four years.

• The board also approved a number of personnel items.

Resignations: Rob Gibson as special needs teacher at Deer Meadow, effective Dec. 20; Alyce Hopple as school psychologist, effective June 7; Caitlin Downing as GMS cheer coach, effective April 1.

Gibson’s hiring had only been approved in December.

Hirings: Susan Berenz as Deer Meadow special needs teacher, effective Jan. 5; Kimberly Doughty as GMS custodian; Marcia Simmerman as substitute cafeteria assistant.

Transfer: Donetta Friend from GMS custodian to GHS custodian.
