Banner Graphic: How long have you been playing sports, and what have they meant to you?

Layna Robinson: “I’ve grown up always playing sports and always being athletic. I love having the adrenaline rush of going out there and doing the best I can. It’s always nice enjoying it with my friends. It’s brought me closer to a lot of people.”

BG: What do you think you have learned from sports?

LR: “Definitely teamwork, and how to go out and work together. It’s given me that aspect of being able to listen to a coach, and take instructions, to get ready for college and a job someday.”

BG: Do you like any of your sports better than the others?

LR: “I have grown up being a gymnast, and I’ve been in these classes since I was four. Everybody thinks that cheerleading is my favorite sport, but I really don’t have a favorite. I always enjoyed softball growing up, too, and basketball. Just having grown up with them in my life I don’t really have a favorite.”

BG: Is one of them harder?

LR: “Basketball practices are a little more difficult than cheerleading or softball.”

BG: What was it like doing your senior cheerleader solo routine at the cheerleader contest last summer?

LR: “Going out there and doing that as a senior was definitely great and was a huge adrenaline rush compared to being with a team in softball or basketball. It’s kind of like memorizing lines for the school play, and it took me a month to get down my senior cheer. After I learned it, it took me two weeks to perfect it after that.”

BG: The basketball sectional is this week. Do you think about how your career will be over sometime this month?

LR: “It’s definitely sad to think about that, but I have just enjoyed being able to be on the team with the girls. Having coach [Bradley] Key as a coach has been really inspiring. He’s a really good coach.”

BG: How will softball go this year?

LR: “I think we have a good chance this year at county and sectionals. I think we’ll be better. I wasn’t sure I would be able to play third base last year, but I got moved there and I guess I became pretty good at it.”

BG: What are you plans for after high school?

LR: “I’m still deciding between UIndy and Southern Indiana. I’m just waiting to see what scholarships I can get. I have a 3.6 GPA. I think I rank 24th in the class of 117. I want to go into nursing. I’m in the Area 30 CNA class, and I’d like to be a nurse. I have always liked helping people growing up. I like helping and caring for people. I enjoy hanging out with babies. There is really good job placement. I’m interning at the surgery department at Putnam County Hospital for my health careers class. It’s really cool to be able to see it all.”

BG: What kinds of other things do you do at school?

LR: “I’m in National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society at Area 30. I’m also a student ambassador at Area 30. I’m on the PIE council at GHS, and I was in Latin Club for three years.

BG: What kinds of things do you do outside of school?

LR: “I like hanging out with my family and friends, and being able to wrestle my little brother. He’s 12, and he’s wrestling this year. I can still beat him for now. On Netflix, I like watching Sons of Anarchy and Stranger Things. I like the Twilight series and also the Blind Side. I listen to pop and country, but I don’t really have a favorite singer or band.”

BG: Do you have any pets?

LR: “I have one dog and one cat, one rabbit and baby goats. I’m not sure how many goats I have. I have done 4-H, and this year I’m a 10-year member. That takes up a lot of time in the summer.”

BG: Describe your overall Greencastle experience.

LR: “It’s been great really nice to grow up here and be able to have my academics and the sports I’ve been able to be involved in. Not only is it a really good school and I learn a lot, but I have also had a fun time being in the atmosphere. The teachers and coaches have all been great and I can’t thank them enough.”
