Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated a pair of recent property-damage crashes.

• At 6:29 p.m. on Monday, Jesse V. McDonald, 21, Lyons, was northbound on U.S. 231, approaching County Road 1200 South in a 2006 Ford Fusion.

McDonald told Deputy Josh Boller her cruise control was set at 60 mph. She said she looked down at her cell phone and did not notice the pickup in front of her had come to a complete stop to make a left turn.

To avoid the collision, she swerved right, crossing 1200 South and coming to rest in a ditch.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

• At 1:55 p.m. on Sunday, Anthony L. Austin, 55, Greencastle, was plowing snow for the Putnam County Highway Department in the Heritage Lake area in a 2011 Freightliner M2 112. Austin was on Valley Forge Road and had just passed the turn-off for Eagle Crest Court.

Austin stopped and began backing into Eagle Crest Court to turn around. He told Deputy Matt Biggs he did not see a vehicle in his mirrors while backing.

David S. Bennett, 42, Coatesville, told Biggs he was behind the plow truck in a 2008 Chrysler Town and Country. He said he attempted to reverse when he realized the plow truck was backing up but could not do so.

As it backed and turned, the truck hit the left front of the van with its right front tire.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.
