Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated a pair of recent property-damage crashes.

• At 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Douglas R. McClure, 46, Onarga, Ill., was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2005 International tractor pulling a trailer. As he rounded a corner approaching County Road 1100 North, McClure noticed a pickup stopped in the southbound lane, waiting for the vehicle in front of it to turn left.

McClure told Deputy Robert Soilleux he was unable to stop and rear-ended the 2001 Ford Ranger driven by Leobardo S. Sanchez, 49, Crawfordsville.

The impact pushed the pickup across the northbound lane and off the road.

Sanchez provided his registration, insurance information and a Mexico Consular ID card but indicated he did not have a driver’s license. He was cited for driving with a suspended license.

Soilleux said Sanchez could not give an account of the crash, as he did not speak English.

Sanchez was transported from the scene with neck pain.

The pickup was towed. Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

• At 8:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Katelynn M. Fulkerson, 24, Cloverdale, was westbound on U.S. 40 just past County Road 925 East in a 2016 Jeep Commander.

Fulkerson told Deputy Matt Biggs she lost control on a patch of black ice then overcorrected and left the north side of U.S. 40, colliding head-on with a tree.

Fulkerson’s airbag did not deploy, but she refused ambulance service. She planned to seek medical attention for a possible broken nose.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

City Police

Two accidents were investigated recently by Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 7:21 a.m. Tuesday, a one-car mishap on Veterans Memorial Highway was blamed on an icy roadway.

Quentyn Bartley, 16, Greencastle, was reportedly eastbound on Veterans Highway, driving a 2002 Oldsmobile, just east of South Jackson Street, when he encountered a curve in the roadway and the car began sliding on the slushy road surface.

The Bartley car left the road on the south side, striking a truck entrance sign for Buzzi Unicem, crossed back across both driving lanes to run off the north side of the highway, coming to rest against a small tree.

Officer Nick Eastham estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 7:28 p.m. on Jan. 31, three vehicles were involved in an Indianapolis Road accident, according to a report just made available Wednesday.

Officer Zach Rhine reported that Thomas Gorham, 37, Greencastle, was westbound on Indianapolis Road, approaching the Percy Julian Drive intersection in a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe, when he reportedly ran a red light and crossed over into the eastbound lanes of Indianapolis Road.

There Gorham’s vehicle struck a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Dane McFarland, 32, Greencastle, which was stopped eastbound at the light. The head-on impact pushed the McFarland car back into a third vehicle, a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Kelsey Hughes, 23, Greencastle, which was also stopped for the light.

Total damage in the accident was estimated at $5,000-$10,000 with the most severe damage occurring to the Gorham and McFarland vehicles.

Gorham was transported to the hospital with unspecified injuries, police said. He was also cited for operating a vehicle without financial responsibility (no insurance) and for driving with a suspended license with a prior offense.
