22 GHS bandsmen earn honors at district music competition

Twenty-two Greencastle High School band students competed Saturday, Feb. 3 in the District Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Contest at Terre Haute North High School. Students prepared for months to perform high levels of music in front of highly qualified judges.

Of the five levels of difficulty to enter solo and ensemble, the GHS students performed in the top three levels. Students were graded on many musical criteria such as intonation, tone quality, dynamics, rhythmic accuracy, musicianship, articulation and note accuracy.

Group III - Gold Rating: Hailey Whitis - Clarinet Solo; Molly Carver - Clarinet Solo.

Group II - Silver Rating: Ben Wilkerson, John Brook, Addison Hughes, and Michael White - Mixed Brass Quartet.

Group II - Gold Rating: Molly Ramey - Alto Sax Solo; Taven Noll - Tuba Solo; Paige Kaiser - Clarinet Solo; Selene Seaman - Flute Solo; Vivian Savage, Paige Kaiser, Catherine Weeks, and Neva Brown - Clarinet Quartet; Sal Martoglio, Mika Mozawa, and Vivian Savage - Mixed Woodwind Trio; Sam Hagen, Josh Lamb, and Maurice Long - Percussion Trio.

Group I - Silver Rating: Mika Mozawa - Flute Solo.

The following entries, listed below, entered Group I and received Gold Ratings. By earning a gold rating at Group I the students qualified to advance to State Solo and Ensemble Contest which will be held at North Central High School in Indianapolis on Saturday, Feb. 24. A total of eight entries with nine students advanced to state competition.

Group I - Gold Rating: Simon Foss, Ben Parsons, and Henry Carter - Saxophone Trio; Ben Wilkerson - Trombone Solo; John Brook - Euphonium Solo; Ben Parsons - Alto Sax Solo; Drake Eisele - Tuba Solo; Addison Hughes - Trumpet Solo; Sam Hagen - Snare Drum Solo; Josh Lamb - Snare Drum Solo.
