Two Greencastle wrestlers are just 12 minutes away from earning a berth at the IHSAA state finals in Indianapolis next weekend.

Junior Trace Thomas and freshman Logan Carrington will both be competing in the Evansville Reitz Semistate on Saturday at the Ford Center, needing two victories to secure a spot in the final four and qualify for the state meet.

Thomas, who placed third in the 160-pound weight class last weekend at the Mooresville Regional, will take a 24-5 record into his first-round match with senior Nolan Weidner of Evansville Mater Dei (27-6).

The winner of the Thomas-Weidner match will battle the winner between Columbus East junior Nick South (40-1) and Mitchell senior Ethan Bohnenkamp (35-7).

Logan Carrington

Carrington finished fourth in the 113-pound weight class at the Mooresville Regional, and takes a 33-6 record into his first-round matchup with junior Jeremy Clark of Columbus East (28-13).

The winner will battle the winner between Boonville sophomore Logan Sutton (41-4) and Owen Valley freshman Tucker Kirkhoff (26-3).

Joining the competitors from the Mooresville Regional are athletes from regionals at Bloomington South, Evansville North and Jeffersonville.

Sixteen wrestlers are entered in each weight class.

The top four finishers in each class advance to the state finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

  • Mr Bennett, you really do a great job of putting unneeded pressure on two very successful athletes. Your headline and opening statement lead one to believe that it will be a snap to advance to state when those in the know realize the Semistate is extremely competitive. It’s a tribute to their talent and hard work that they are representing Greencastle in the Semistate. We all wish them the best of luck and will be proud of them regardless of the outcome.
