Firewood program extended at Shades, Turkey Run

Thursday, February 22, 2018

The public can cut certain downed trees in designated areas at Shades and Turkey Run state parks for firewood through March 31.

Trees eligible for firewood have fallen as a result of natural causes or have been dropped by property staff. They are along roadsides or in public areas such as campsites and picnic areas.

A firewood permit must be obtained for each load. Permits are available at the Turkey Run office, nature center or gate house between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily, including weekends, and at Shades State Park’s service area between 10 a.m. and noon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Permit sales were scheduled to end this month. The park has extended the program to March 31 because firewood remains available.

The cost of one pickup-truck load is $10. All proceeds will be used for resource management and restoration efforts, including replacement of trees in campgrounds and other public areas.

Wood may be cut and removed between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. For more information, call 765-597-2635.

Firewood from state parks is for personal use only and cannot be sold.
