Greencastle’s Emma Wilson continues to shine on the indoor track and field circuit, setting a new personal best on Saturday.

Competing with the newly-formed “Miles to Go” running club based in Greencastle, Wilson shattered her previous best time by five seconds in recording a 4:50.81 in the Western Indiana Classic III meet hosted by Terre Haute South at DePauw University.

Wilson — the reigning state champion in cross counry and the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs in track — defeated long-time foe Phoebe Bates of Carmel (running unattached) by nearly eight seconds to record the win.

Her time was nearly five seconds faster than the national best she recorded earlier this month in a meet at Wabash College.

“I felt good,” Wilson said. “I raced the 1600 a few weeks ago, which gave me a good idea of what to expect for this race.”

Wilson said the tough competition, which included several runners from Kentucky, helped her to achieve the outstanding time.

“I try to pace well and coach keeps track of the splits for us,” she said. “There were alot of fast runners and I had fun racing.”

Greencastle coach Craig Jordan formed the “Miles to Go” club, which is a USA Track & Field competitive member club for middle school and high school students.

Jordan was pleased with Wilson’s performance at the big meet.

“Emma was very excited to race and we felt she had a good chance to PR with all of the competition,” he said. “She did not waste any time as she went to the front and ran under 70 seconds for the first 400 meters.”

Jordan noted that Wilson’s time of 4:50.81 is the 11th fastest 1,600 of all-time for Indiana high school girls.

“It’s amazing how quick she is running right now and to think of how much quicker she can run when the season really gets going and she gets better at pacing herself.”

The “Miles to Go” club offers summer and winter programs as well as monthly individual training plans.
