North Putnam middle school girls win in OT, blowout

The North Putnam Cougar seventh-grade girls’ basketball team edged the South Putnam Eagles 15-14 in overtime on Tuesday night to advance to the finals of the Putnam County Tournament.

Kylie Rust hit one of-two free throws with 1:32 left in overtime and the Cougars held on to win.

North was able to lead the game at halftime 6-3 as they held the Eagles scoreless for the last 10:50 of the first half. Hannah Teipen had the only Eagle points on an early three-pointer.

North was able to take a 12-9 lead on two Emmy Jeter free throws, but Jenna VanRensselaer nailed a three-pointer to tie the score with :12 left in regulation.

The Eagles took their first lead since the first quarter early in the overtime, but the Cougars were able get three free throws during the extra period and hold on for the 15-14 win.

Keaton Burress led the Cougars with eight points. VanRenssalaer led the Eagles with five points.

Eighth grade

North Putnam used a 17-0 first quarter to cruise to a 58-27 victory over the South Putnam Eagles on Tuesday night. Brie Miller had 22 points and 18 rebounds to lead North.

North used a pressure defense and pounded the boards to jump out to a 17-0 first quarter lead. Miller had 13 of her 22 to lead the way.

South was able to find a little offense in the second quarter as Lilly Vittetow scored six of her team-high 15 points.

The Cougars couldn’t be slowed down, as they scored 19 points in the period and led 36-11 at the intermission.

Miller led all scorers with 22 points
