Clovers win 7th, Cubs capture 8th in middle school county
Cloverdale and Greencastle split a pair of games on Tuesday night in the Putnam County girls middle school basketball tournament.
Cloverdale won the 7th-grade game 34-8, while Greencastle won the 8th-grade game by a 32-16 margin.
In the 7th-grade game, Cloverdale scored the first eight points of the game and led 13-3 after one quarter. Emma Hunter had the first six of those points and had nine of her game-high 19 in the period.
Cloverdale outscored Greencastle 11-0 in the second period, with Hunter getting six more points and Andrea Nees adding three more to give the Clovers a 24-3 halftime lead.
The Clovers were held to just two points in the third period, while Greencastle hit three free throws to cut the deficit to 26-6 after three quarters.
In the eighth-grade game, Anna Zellers of Greencastle found the range from the outside on a cold night when shooting percentages were otherwise not high.
Zellers hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter to help her team take a 5-1 lead after one period.
Zellers scored all seven of her teams points in the second quarter with a free throw and a pair of treys as the Cubs took a 12-2 halftime lead.
Zellers, who finished with 18 points on 6 of 13 shooting (including 5 of 7 from 3-point range), opened the third quarter with another trey to start off an 11-0 run that put her team up 23-2 with 1:23 left in the third quarter.
The Cubs increased their lead to 32-7 with 3:16 left in the fourth period on the final trey by Zellers, and the Clovers scored the final nine points of the game as Greencastle put its reserves into the game.
Veronica Carter paced Cloverdale with eight points.
