Roachdale awards road bid to Grady Brothers

ROACHDALE -- The Roachdale Town Council awarded the bid for its Road Improvement Project to Grady Brothers, of Indianapolis, at $493,698.32.

The bid package listed a completion date of Aug. 21. Work is estimated to begin in April or May.

The project will be funded by the Community Crossings Grant, which the town received from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) in the amount of $496,710 in October.

The other bids were: All Star Paving (Seymour), $539,429; Dave O'Mara Contractors (North Vernon), $532,600; Midwest Paving (Noblesville), $581,599; and Milestone Contractors (Indianapolis), $610,730.

The bids were reviewed by the project engineer and town attorney.

Clerk-Treasurer Debbie Sillery said she will look into having Grady Brothers redo the basketball court while in the town, and reported that the millings will be used to create a path from South Street to Roachdale Elementary School.

Millings will not be available for parking lots.

In other news:

-- Claims: The council approved claims at a total of $124,884.45, a decrease from last month of $5,085.91. The year's average is $165,088.85.

-- Community Center: Clerk-Treasurer Sillery reported that she should know in two weeks whether the town received a public facilities grant in the amount of $500,000 from the Indiana Office of Rural and Community Affairs (IOCRA).

The Community Center Improvements Project is expected to cost about $556,300. If the grant is received, the remaining balance will be supplied by the Putnam County Community Foundation and town EDIT funds.

The building is located at 204 N. Indiana St., which also hosts the Roachdale town mural. It was donated by TDS Communications, the local phone and internet service, which had used the building for its regional corporate offices.

The Community Center will include an assembly hall, commercial kitchen, small group rooms and senior citizen rooms. Clerk-Treasurer Sillery also reported that some people have already donated games and exercise equipment.

-- Easter egg hunt: The Roachdale VFW's Breakfast with the Easter Bunny event will be March 31 from 8-10 a.m. at the Roachdale Elementary School. The Easter egg hunt will also be March 31 at 1 p.m. and will meet at the elementary school. The event is sponsored by the Roachdale VFW and Roachdale in A.C.T.I.O.N.

-- Flagpoles: The council approved the purchase of sturdier flagpoles at a cost not to exceed $2,000.

-- Potholes: Town Marshal Mike Mahoy said that potholes will be filled some time next week.

-- Property Clean-ups: Marshal Mahoy said the town normally begins to enforce property maintenance ordinances about April.

-- Roachdale Police Department: Since the council's last regular meeting, the Roachdale Police Department (RPD) has responded to calls for one DUI, one property-damage traffic crash, one personal injury traffic crash, one theft (larceny), one burglary (breaking and entering), three disturbances/nuisances, one domestic disturbance/violence, two suspicious/wanted persons, one damage/vandalism/mischief, one field fire and one unconscious/fainting.

The RPD performed one child custody, one agency assist, three citizen assists, one lock-out/public assistance, one service call/lift assist and 26 traffic stops.

-- Utility Superintendent: The council approved the hiring of Nick Miller as utility superintendent at $23 per hour, as well as the hiring of Levi Chinn as second full-time laborer at $16.50 per hour.

Marshal Mahoy and Clerk-Treasurer Sillery had served as utility superintendents until a replacement for Ronnie Campbell, who is now the Bainbridge town marshal, could be found.

The Roachdale Town Council's next regular meeting is set for April 10 at 7 p.m. in the Roachdale Town Hall, 205 N. Indiana St.
