Officials at the Alliance of Indiana Rural Water have found the best-tasting water in the second of four regional competitions throughout the state of Indiana.

On March 14, during the Alliance of Indiana Rural Water's Spring Conference in French Lick the winner of the second regional competition with the tastiest water was Greencastle Department of Water Works. Participating water samples were judged on three categories -- clarity, odor and taste.

The Greencastle Department of Water Works will advance to the state competition -- "The Best Tasting Water in Indiana" at the Alliance of Indiana Rural Water's Fall Conference in Fort Wayne in October.

Greencastle's water is a previous winner of the state taste award.

Greencastle will compete with the winners from three other regions of the state, including Fort Wayne, which last month captured the Region 1 competition.

The local water sample -- a one-gallon sample submitted in a glass container -- was chosen by judges as the most appealing in Region 3.

"It tasted clean, pure and refreshing," official judge Phil Bastin, BBP Water Corp. stated.

"Because of the quality of this water, they have a good chance at the 'Best Tasting Water in Indiana' competition," added Alliance of Indiana Rural Water Executive Director Connie Stevens.

The competition is part of the Quality On Tap! campaign to emphasize the high quality, standards and, consequently, taste of rural water.

Systems submitting samples must be members of the Alliance and meet IDEM approval by having no violations of bacteriological testing or chemical monitoring for two years prior to the Taste Test.

The winner of the Best Tasting Water in Indiana will advance to compete in The Great American Water Taste Test, a national contest, at Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., in early February 2019. This event is part of the Rural Water Rally, an annual legislative event for the 49 state affiliates of National Rural Water Association.

The Alliance of Indiana Rural Water is a non-profit membership association of more than 850 water and wastewater systems and related professionals.

The Alliance provides training and onsite technical assistance on Safe Drinking Water Act compliance issues, public health protection (as it relates to drinking water), managerial issues, financial issues and operational issues to water and wastewater systems in Indiana.
